New Tug is a Mechanical Hybrid

The concept of “hybrid tug” is getting a whole new definition with an innovative new tug under construction at Turkey’s Uzmar Shipyard for the Danish Port of Aarhus. From the outside it looks very similar to other Robert Allan Ltd-designed tugs built at the Uzmar yard. SCHOTTEL to Equip New Tug for Port of Aarhus

German propulsion manufacturer SCHOTTEL said it has been awarded a contract to supply UZMAR Shipyard with rudder propellers featuring the patented hybrid system SYDRIVE-M. The Turkish shipyard is currently building a 30.25-meter-long and 11.75-meter-wide RAmparts 3000 series tugboat for the Port of Aarhus, Denmark’s largest container port.The new tugboat, which is scheduled for delivery in summer 2021, will ensure greener operations and higher efficiency when it goes into operation at the Port of Aarhus.

Port of Aarhus Orders New Tug from Uzmar

The Port of Aarhus and UZMAR Shipyard connected May 29 via video conference to finalize a contract for the construction of a new RAmparts 3000 series tugboat for delivery in summer 2021.Denmark's largest container port said it invested approximately 45 million DKK, or roughly $6.8 million, to acquire the newbuild, which will be far more eco-friendly, efficient and powerful than the vessel it will replace. The port cited strength, precision and environmental sustainability as key reasons behind its decision to replace the 40-year-old Hermes, which will be sold once its replacement arrives.

DMA Begins Digital Voyage

The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) has launched a pilot project on digital certificates for seafarers.MUMBAI MÆRSK heads out from the Port of Aarhus for destinations in Europe, Africa and Asia with crew certificates that are entirely digital instead of traditional paper certificates yesterday (May 29). This is simpler, faster and safer for seafarers, shipping companies and authorities.During the voyage, the merchant ship will call into port in Germany, Morocco, Singapore, China and South Korea, where it will collect data and knowledge about the use of digital certificates for seafarers. In particular in connection with Port State Control.The pilot project aims to explore the advantages of digital certificates and hopefully pave the way for global acceptance and utilization.

Seaway Cargo Shipments Up 17% First Half of Season

Cargo shipments through the St. Lawrence Seaway continue to be buoyed by demand for iron ore and steel slabs with an overall increase of 16.6% year-to-date compared to the same period last year. The St. Lawrence Seaway reported that marine vessels carried 14.8 million tonnes of cargo from March 25 to July 31 — an increase of over 2 million tonnes compared to the 12.7 million tonnes handled during the same period last year. Total shipments during the month of July were down 4.8% compared to the same period in 2009 due to lower coal and grain traffic. However, iron ore continued to perform strongly during the month with a 30% increase to 892,000 tonnes. Imports of steel slabs, in the category of break bulk, rebounded to 45,000 tonnes.
