MARAD Awards $20 Million in Shipyard Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) on Monday awarded $19.6 million in grants aiming to help 31 shipyards modernize, increase productivity, and expand local employment opportunities while competing in the global marketplace.The grants were awarded to shipbuilding and repair yards in 15 states throughout the U.S. as part of MARAD's Small Shipyard Grant Program. Since 2008, the program has awarded $262.5 million to nearly 300 shipyards in 32 states and territories.

Wärtsilä Debuts HY for Dredgers

Wärtsilä launched the Wärtsilä HY for Dredger, a new product based on Wärtsilä’s HY hybrid propulsion technology, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of dredging operations.The product was recently unveiled at a Future Dredger Day event held at the Wärtsilä's Hybrid Center in Trieste, Italy. The Wärtsilä HY for Dredger features a combination of different power sources, including the engines and energy storage systems, the power distribution equipment, and the Energy Management System (EMS). The EMS ensures instant load taking and dynamic power demand.

L-3 Westwood: $6.5m Order for DDG 114, DDG 116

L-3 Westwood received orders totaling over $6.5m from Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (GDBIW) to provide power distribution equipment  for the U.S. Navy’s DDG 114 and DDG 116 ships, respectively. DDG 114 and 116 are the 64th and 66th ships of the Arleigh Burke class being built for the U.S. Navy by the two companies. “L-3 Westwood is pleased to be working with great partners like Ingalls Shipbuilding and GDBIW,” said Clayton McClain, president of L-3 Westwood. “The DDG 114 order is noteworthy as it represents the 50th shipset of the DDG 51 power  distribution equipment that Westwood has received, and is the 23rd order from Ingalls.
