Vard Secures Trawler Build Contract
Vard Holdings Limited said it has secured a contract to build a pelagic trawler for Research Fishing Company, based on Shetland. The contract value is approximately NOK 350 million (roughly $41.4 million USD). In close cooperation with the ship owner, the vessel is designed by Skipsteknisk in Ålesund, Norway. It will also be built, equipped and completed in Norway. Delivery is scheduled from Vard Langsten in 3Q 2018. New Barge Pulling System
Thern Inc. announced a new alternative -- The Barge Pulling System – to help position barges more efficiently when loading and unloading, without the use of tug boats. The new system uses two power winches and a control panel that is designed to help operators easily maneuver barges along the edge of the pier. By letting out line on one of the winches and pulling in on the other, the system is able to control the tension so operators can reduce slack and eliminate barge drift. To accurately position the barge, operators can either control each winch individually or in tandem, either manually or automatically. A special indicator switch lets the operator select the mode, while a joystick provides directional control.

Contract for New Z-Drive Harbor Tug
A contract for the Hector P., a new 4,200 hp Z-Drive harbor tug to be built by Orange Shipbuilding for South Puerto Rico Towing Corporation was signed last month. Bristol Harbor Marine Design assisted in the harbor tug contract negotiations along with the acting buyer’s agent, Eric Rivera from Harbor Bunkering Corporation of San Juan, Puerto Rico. “The HECTOR P. is going to raise the bar for tugboats in Puerto Rico,” said Mr. Rivera. BHMD will also be serving as owner’s representative throughout the duration of the project and will be responsible for project inspections and approvals. Design of the new vessel is being completed at Robert Allan, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C.
Washburn & Doughty Wins Hybrid Tug Orders
East Boothbay, Maine based Washburn & Doughty said it has secured a contract with Harbor Docking and Towing, of Lake Charles, La., to design and build two 93’ x 38’ Hybrid Z Drive Tugs. The 93’ x 38’ hull is a proven design with 18 tugs in operation and 4 under construction. The vessel will be built as a Harbor Assist Vessel as defined in USCG Subchapter M and admeasure less than 200 gross tons U.S. regulatory tonnage. Caterpillar Marine will provide a ‘stem-to-stern’ Cat content hybrid propulsion system, with support from both Milton Cat and Louisiana Cat in the sales effort. OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.
Tuco Marine Sells First ProZero Fast Workboat
Tuco Marine Group says that it has sold its first boat shortly after the launch of ProZero, the new range of boats for the professional market. The vessel was sold in close cooperation with Tuco's Norwegian partner Provide Maritime A/S and was commissioned by Bergen & Omland Friluftsråd for the Archipelago service. The vessel, a ProZero 10.5 DC Archipelago, is from the newly developed ProZero Vesel series. The hull design is based on the well proven hulls from Tuco's Guard Vessel Series. The Guard series has been produced and continuously developed by Tuco since 2002.
Norwegian Archipelago Orders ProZero Workboat
Norwegian Archipelago Services has bought a second ProZero workboat. The vessel was sold by Tuco Marine in Denmark in close cooperation with Tuco’s Norwegian partner Provide Maritime A/S and was commissioned by Holmestrand Municipality for the Archipelago service. Damen Shipyards Gorinchem recently completed the research vessel Celtic Explorer for the Irish Marine Institute of Dublin. This 65 m ship was constructed by Damen in partnership with the Vlissingen yard of Royal Schelde and follows two other important vessels previously delivered to Ireland, the research vessel “Celtic Voyager” and the buoy maintenance ship Granuaille. The work to be carried out by this new vessel will include a National Seabed Survey in Irish waters, perform a vital role in monitoring and recording fish stocks, oceanographic tasks, and wide range of other maritime duties. The new vessel is only the third of its kind in Europe and represents a significant milestone in Irish marine research. The vessel will be named on April 11, 2003 in Galway, Ireland.

Winch Safety through Standardization
For decades, barge owners and operators had no reason to think twice about their rigging. There were only a few choices when it came to winches, and there were ratchets as well. Because of the simplicity of these machines, few people in the industry were compelled to think critically about how such a basic item might be improved. But winches and ratchets have their downsides: fouling and birdnesting can and do happen. Wire rope is heavy, and traditional rigging takes a lot of it. And old-fashioned winches require a good amount of time and effort to operate. But what else was there?
Comprehensive Winch Outfitting for New Trawlers
Fishing company HB Grandi of Iceland recently awarded Naust Marine a contract for complete winch outfitting of three new 180 ft. fishing trawlers. The contract, of record size for the winch supplier, will see Naust provide no less than 20 electrical winches per vessel, including two trawl winches and three Gilsons each; four sweep-line winches, one out-haul winch, one cod-end winch, two backstrap winches, three retriever winces, one third wire winch and one trix-winch, located close to the sweep line winches. In addition to these, there are two anchor-mooring winches.
Naust Marine Wins Huge Winch Order
Hradfrystihusid Gunnvor (HG) and Vinnslustodin (VSV) recently awarded Naust Marine contracts to provide a complete suite of electric winches for their newbuild trawlers. Naust will supply no less than 29 winches per vessel, including three trawl winches and three Gilsons; six sweepline, two outhaul, two codend, four backstrap, three retriever and two net-lifting winches are included as auxiliaries. In addition to these, there is an anchor winch, a net reel, and—not widely known outside Europe—two winches of the trix type.
Harley’s Latest tug begins service
The latest addition to the Harley Marine fleet is now completing sea trials and preparing to enter service. The “M/V Earl W. Redd” will be operated under the flag of the Olympic Tug & Barge unit of Harley. The 120 foot tractor tug, built by Diversified Marine Inc. in Portland, Oregon, and named after the father of Diversified President Kurt Redd, is slated to enter service providing unrestricted coastal towing along the West Coast of the United States. Tier IV-compliant CAT engines coupled to Rolls-Royce “Z-drives” power the tug, delivering an expected bollard pull capability of 75 tons.
MacGregor Wins Deck Machinery Order in China
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has signed contracts with Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shunhai Shipyard Ltd to deliver anchor handling/towing winch packages for five 48m anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels, each with a 75-tonne bollard pull and one 40m AHTS vessel with a 70-tonne bollard pull. The vessels are under construction for an undisclosed Middle East owner. The order was booked into third quarter 2015 order intake. REL to Supply Deep Ocean Mooring Winch System to NOC
Romica Engineering Ltd (REL) have signed a contract with the U.K.’s National Oceanography Center (NOC) to provide a containerized deep ocean mooring winch system. This 4,000m capacity winch system, with a hydraulic power unit, will be used at sea for various large mooring operations. This winch system will be freighted worldwide in an ISO 20’open topped container. An electrically driven hydraulic power unit is also to be supplied in a 10’ ISO certified container. This self-contained unit will also contain all peripherals for the winch system (spares / remote / cables and hoses).
JonRie Winch set for McAllister Towing
JonRie Marine Winches supplied its 6th ship set of Full 90 Ton Winch to McAllister Towing of NY installed on their new tug Jeffrey McAllister. The 92’ (30 meter) x 36’ (11 meter) Z-Drive Tug was built by Eastern Shipbuilding, Panama City, FL. The 5,150 HP tugs with a bollard pull of 75 Tons is the latest addition to the McAllister Fleet. Rapp Hydema has closed a major contract with STX Finland Oy Shipyard related to a new research vessel. The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources selected STX Finland Oy to build new hull, No. 1378, which will undertake fishery survey missions. Distinctive for recent orders is an admixture of both electric and hydraulic machinery. Hydraulically-powered machinery includes the Rapp trawl winches.
