American Sensor Technologies Achieves ATEX Certification

Martek Marine Releases VECSAFE
Martek Marine Ltd has released VECSAFE, their innovative new safety device which safely monitors oxygen and pressure in vapor emission control systems. The combination of the MMS3000 oxygen sensor and MMS200 pressure sensor provides an intrinsically safe vapor emission control system, which continuously monitors oxygen content and pressure, all of which is controlled via the GDS404 control panel. Both the MMS3000 oxygen sensor and the MMS200 pressure sensor are constructed in 316 SS material, ensuring the system is rugged and weatherproof. Lloyds' Alert: Secondary Means of Venting on Tankers
Changes to SOLAS Regulations II-2/4.5.3 (Cargo Tank Venting) and II-2/11.6 (Protection of Cargo Tank Structure against Pressure or Vacuum in Tankers) adopted through Resolution MSC.392(95) will apply to tankers constructed on or after January 1, 2017. The changes mean that these ships must have an independent, secondary means of venting for each tank: that is, a full flow pressure/vacuum (P/V) valve or a pressure sensor that provides an alarm on detecting over-pressure or under-pressure. Note: a pressure sensor is only acceptable as a secondary means if a full flow P/V valve is fitted as the primary means of venting for each cargo tank, as per the arrangement in SOLAS Regulation II-2/188.8.131.52.

SAIC Tsunami Buoy System for Russian Federation
Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) announced it has been awarded a contract for the production and delivery of an SAIC Tsunami Buoy (STB) system by the Far Eastern Ecological Center, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, for the Far Eastern Regional Hydrometeorological Research Institute (FERHRI), Vladivostok, Russian Federation. Sonardyne Retrieves Pressure Inverted Echo Sounder
Sonardyne International has retrieved its first Pressure Inverted Echo Sounder (PIES) off the coast of Hawaii. This new sensor logging node is designed to accurately measure the average sound velocity through a column of water from the seabed to the sea surface. The information gathered will help oceanographers to better understand the dynamics of the ocean and atmosphere-ocean coupling. On September 24, the Sonardyne PIES was free-fall deployed into a 960-meter deep water channel close to the big island of Hawaii, and commanded to log average sound velocity readings every seven minutes.
Offspring Launches Oiltech Surge Protector
Mooring and offloading systems supplier, Offspring International, has announced a rapid response, surge protection system for terminal loading hoses. Called Oiltech Surge Protector, the hose monitoring system offers a smarter and more sensitive way of detecting hose overpressure during tanker loading. If a pressure surge is detected, pumping operations are automatically shutdown. According to the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (2013), the highest incidence of tanker related oil spills is during loading operations.

HHI Inks Local Equipment MOU
Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced today it has signed a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Establishment of Industrial Cluster for Localizing Marine Equipment Between Marine Equipment Manufacturing and Supply Companies” at Hotel Hyundai Ulsan. Under the MOU, HHI will join forces with KOMERI, a domestic marine equipment research institute and 25 local marine equipment manufacturers to cooperate in the field of research and planning, product development, verification test, certification and engineer exchanges. Starting with the goal of localizing 18 marine equipment including pressure sensors for marine engines and gas injection valves, the three parties plan to increase production of the equipment that they can produce independently.
