Navy Accepts Delivery of USS Zumwalt

The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of its first Zumwalt-class destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) on April 24 following Combat Systems Activation.The ship will transition to the next phase of developmental and integrated at-sea testing. This event marks a major milestone of the dual delivery approach for USS Zumwalt, which achieved Hull Mechanical & Electrical delivery from shipbuilder General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works in May 2016. Raytheon Anschütz Expands US operations

Raytheon Company announced the launch of its new subsidiary, Raytheon Anschuetz USA LLC, located in San Diego, Calif. According to the company, Raytheon Anschuetz USA LLC aims to reinforce customer care and support for Raytheon Anschütz navigation systems in the United States for commercial ship owners and shipyards as well as government entities, including the Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, Navy and Army. “In January 2012, Raytheon Anschütz returned to the U.S. navigation systems market with the establishment of a San Diego-based regional sales office. Now, we are taking the next step to becoming America’s new center of navigation excellence,” said Frank Christophersen, president of the new subsidiary.

AN/SPY-1 SSSA Completes Critical Design Review

The Critical Design Review (CDR) stage for AN/SPY-1 radar Solid-State Switch Assembly (SSSA)'s high voltage modulator completed Aug. 26, confirming that the design is expected to meet performance requirements. A CDR confirms the system is on track to achieve affordability and cost goals, and establishes the system's initial product baseline. The successful close-out of the CDR milestone means that the SSSA has achieved a high level of maturity, and is ready to start complete hardware design and system testing. SSSA is intended to replace the current vacuum tube modulator switches in the AN/SPY-1 radar transmitter with functionally similar, highly reliable solid-state switches. The AN/SPY-1 radar constitutes the primary air and surface search radar for the AEGIS Weapons System.

Raytheon Get US$35-Million Navy LCS Sonar Contract

Raytheon Company says it is to provide the U.S. Navy with AN/AQS-20A minehunting sonar systems and equipment. The system leverages advanced sonar technologies to support the Navy's critical minehunting missions, ensuring safe access and passage for military and civilian vessels on the world's oceans and waterways. Deployed from the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) as the variable depth sonar for the AN/WLD-1 Remote Minehunting System (RMS), the AN/AQS-20A system is towed undersea to scan the water in front, below and to the sides of the vehicle for anti-shipping mines.

Raytheon Choose Kennedy to Take Over From CEO Swanson

Raytheon Company says its Board of Directors has elected Dr. Thomas A. Kennedy to serve as its Chief Executive Officer, effective March 31, 2014, when William H. Swanson, who has served as CEO since 2003, steps down following his 65th birthday. Afterwards, Swanson will continue to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors while the Company completes the transition to the new Chief Executive Officer. Raytheon to Supply Navy Unmanned Vessel Sonar

Raytheon Company awarded a sub-contract from Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for its latest medium frequency hull-mounted sonar system. The sub-contract is part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program. According to the U.S. Navy , 43 nations operate more than 600 submarines; the steady increase in undersea vessels makes tracking a challenge. Raytheon's Modular Scalable Sonar System (MS3) will integrate into SAIC's prototype trimaran vessel as the primary search and detection sonar. The systemis designed to provide search, detection, passive-threat filtering, localization and tracking capabilities without requiring human operation.

Adapting Commercial Container Ships to Deliver Emergency Aid

Through the TEMP program, Raytheon is creating an innovative system of modular technologies – including air and sea cargo transport, cargo transfer and onboard support resources – that enable commercial container ships (cargo ships) to support humanitarian aid and other non-combat missions through the use of advanced technology such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Unlike naval ships, commercial vessels are not designed with the capabilities needed for aid missions. Through the TEMP system, alternative vessels such as container ships could be quickly readied to carry out an aid initiative with limited manpower. The system can be deployed in less than a day and is capable of maintaining mission operations for 30 days or more.

Raytheon Delivers US Fleet's First Dual Frequency Sonar

Raytheon Company completed delivery of the electronics for the AN/SQQ-90 tactical sonar suite, the complex sonar for the first ship of the U.S. Navy's DDG 1000-class multimission destroyer. The AN/SQQ-90 tactical sonar suite, the first dual-frequency hull-mounted sonar of the Navy's surface fleet, is a major advancement in undersea warfare capability and will provide broad warfighting coverage to DDG 1000. Raytheon delivered the sonar electronics completely assembled and integrated into an Electronic Modular Enclosure (EME), an innovation to 21st century shipbuilding designed into the Zumwalt-class destroyer program for affordability.

Dr. Fraser Smith of Raytheon is the President of Raytheon Sarcos, part of Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business. He’s also the chief proponent of a new technology that could revolutionize how shipyards move, store and retrieve bulky, awkward and heavy materials. Raytheon is actively marketing the robotic device now and looking to find follow-on funding to make the product commercially viable. Based on their early findings and performance, they are well on their way to doing just that.

Raytheon Advances Ship Computing

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) achieved another in a series of milestones for the Zumwalt-class destroyer program with the successful Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE) Release 6 software specifications review. Zumwalt’s TSCE is an advanced, open systems architecture that provides a scalable platform for cost-efficient delivery of new mission capability while capitalizing on the reuse of millions of lines of code from existing Navy programs. The system delivers a new level of Mission Systems Integration and automation. As such, it is a primary driver for the 60 percent reduction in manning for the Zumwalt-class destroyer versus the requirement for today’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

New Navy Contracts

Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $14,909,781 fixed price contract for three FY09 Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) MK2 Open Architecture Computing Environment (OACE) kits to support CVN/Amphibious ship modernization efforts. The SSDS MK2 OACE kits include cabinets, processors, converters, network devices and interface units. The equipment sets consolidate the computing and interface requirements for the SSDS Ship Class variants. The FY09 kits will be installed on LPD 18, Self Defense Test Ship (SDTS) and CVN 69. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif. (50 percent) and Portsmouth, R.I. (50 percent). Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was not competitively procured.

A supplier to Raytheon IDS for the past 7 years, Federal Electronics was honored with the award for the company's exemplary performance and contribution to the success of Raytheon IDS and its customers. Alion $10.2m Contract to Support Seabasing

The Office of Naval Research has awarded Alion Science and Technology a $10.2 million task order to develop and deliver a detailed design package for the Sea Base Connector Transformable-Craft (T-Craft) program. The cost-plus-fixed-fee task order No. 0003 was awarded on May 8. Under Phase II of the T-Craft contract, which was awarded in November 2007, Alion will develop, design and build full and partial scale models of new technologies to demonstrate their viability. These technologies supporting the T-Craft mission include skirt and lift system development, an innovative overland propulsion power distribution system and vehicle transfer technologies.

CAE Awarded U.S. Navy Contracts

CAE has been selected to supply electric plant control systems for the largest and most advanced warship in naval history, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), as well as for the U.S. Navy’s latest LPD 17 class amphibious ship, the USS New York (LPD 21). The total value of these contracts is approximately C$12 million. CAE will provide prime contractor Northrop Grumman Newport News with computer-based control system technology for the USS George H.W. Bush. DD(X) National Team Introduces Next-Generation Shipboard Radar

The DD(X) National Team, led by Northrop Grumman Corporation, has introduced the U.S. Navy's first shipboard active phased array multifunction radar, AN/SPY-3, designed to meet all horizon search and fire control requirements for the 21st century fleet. The SPY-3 multifunction radar, designed by Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems and introduced in a ribbon-cutting ceremony here yesterday, combines the functions provided by more than five separate radars currently aboard Navy surface combatants. The U.S. Navy's revolutionary DD(X) destroyer program passed two critical milestones in the past month with the successful completion of Preliminary Design Reviews (PDRs) by the U.S. Navy on two of the ship's subsystems: the Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE) and the MK 57 Vertical Launching System (VLS). Under a three-year $1.3 billion contract, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems serves as the weapon and electronic systems integrator for DD(X) -- the next-generation destroyer for the U.S. Navy that will revolutionize naval technology for the 21st century.
