Wärtsilä Adds Gate Rudders to Its Propulsion Lineup

Wärtsilä announced it will include Japanese-designed gate rudders as part of it propulsion offering for newbuild vessels and retrofit.The Finnish-based firm said it signed a license and cooperation agreement with Kuribayashi Steamship Co for future development, sales and servicing of the gate rudders. As an authorized license holder and partner, Wärtsilä intends to fully integrate gate rudders within its propulsion product designs for all vessel classes and focus on global markets outside Japan.

VEKA Orders Steering Systems for 15 Newbuilds

Last week contracts were signed at the VEKA head office in Werkendam by Stefhan van den Hil from VEKA Group bv (right) and Leo van Zon, Van der Velden Marine Systems B.V. (left). VEKA Group has signed contracts with Van der Velden Marine Systems for 15 complete maneuvering systems consisting of an integrated alarm and control steering panel, hydraulics, steering gear and high lift rudders. The installations are required for newly designed inland tankers from the “RPG” series as ordered by the Belgium based Plouvier Transport N.V. and her daughter company Intership AG.

New Appointments at Becker Marine Systems USA

Becker Marine Systems USA continues growth in North America. Becker Marine Systems, the leader in rudder technology and the inventor of the Becker Mewis Duct Energy-Saving Device has added Brian Rhoades and Adam Wood to their USA staff. Mr. Rhoades will have the role of Northeast Sales Representative and will be based in Pennsylvania. A Kings Point graduate, he brings 30 years of experience to the role and will support Becker customers in Eastern Canada and the US. Mr. Wood joins Becker after a US Navy Nuclear Engineering career and holds a BS degree in Applied Sciences.Adam will serve as Field Service Engineer supporting domestic and Global customer projects working from Becker Marine Systems new North America Headquarters based in the Houston area in Webster, Texas.

Harley Marine NY Welcomes New Vessel

Harley Marine NY, a subsidiary of Harley Marine Services, took delivery of the river style push-boat, HMS Justice, from Conrad Shipyard of Morgan City, Louisiana. HMS Justice is the fifth vessel in this class and joins the New York fleet of two tugboats and four double hull petroleum barges. HMS Justice will provide petroleum barge transportation services in New York Harbor. Harley Marine has partnered with Conrad Shipyard to build a series of vessels. "The HMS Justice is a quality built vessel, a testament to the craftsmanship and skill of the shipyard. We look forward to a long relationship with Conrad with more vessels to come in the near future", reports Jonathan Mendes, interim General Manager of Harley Marine NY.

Becker Rudders for Five Container Giants

Despite the ongoing shipping crisis, Becker Marine Systems said it is on course for 2013. The Hamburg-based company was awarded the contract to equip five 18,000-TEU container ships under construction for China Shipping Container Lines with effective high performance rudders. With a transport capacity of 18,000 standard containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit or TEU), the container ships currently under construction for China Shipping Container Lines at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea will be among the largest cargo ships in the world.

Van der Velden Supplying Rudder System on RoPax

Van der Velden Marine Systems delivered two TIMON rudders for TANIT, the new RoPax ferry of la CompagnieTunisienne de Navigation (CoTuNav). Tunisia’s state owned ferry company CoTuNav has chosen the Korean shipyard DMSE to build this new RoPax cruise ferry, which will be one of the largest ferries in the Mediterranean when delivered in May, 2012. What’s more, with a maximum speed of 30 knots, it will also be one of the fastest sailing ferries in the world. The ferry is designed with two separate engine rooms with the propeller shaftlines having different lengths of well over 40 metres.

Becker Marine Systems at the Kormarine 2009

Becker Marine Systems will present its product portfolio at the Kormarine 2009 from October 21 to 24. This is the leading Korean exhibition for the global shipbuilding market. At the Becker booth visitors will experience a presentation of the company’s wide product range comprising of the Twisted Rudders TLKSR and TLFKSR, the Schilling KSR Rudder and the Mewis Duct. The latter has been recently introduced at the SMM 2008. Since the launch of the fuel-saving Mewis Duct Becker has signed the first orders. The brand-new product will be installed on three existing vessels as retrofit. Becker expects to improve the propulsion by at least 5% and 7.5% respectively.
