NY Waterway Christens New Ferry Arthur E. Imperatore

New York Waterway on Monday christened its new vessel Arthur E. Imperatore, named in honor of the company's late founder. The vessel will provide scenic tours of New York Harbor in addition to commuter transportation.Built locally by Yank Marine in Tuckahoe, N.J., the Arthur E. Imperatore is a brand new, low-emission 2,000-horsepower, Tier 3 compliant ferry designed to carry 600 passengers. The vessel has a service speed of 21 knots. NY Waterway's New Ferry Franklin Delano Roosevelt Enters Service

A new passenger vessel entered service for operator NY Waterway, serving as both a commuter ferry and for scenic tours of the harbor with Big City Tourism.Built locally by New Jersey-based Yank Marine in Tuckahoe, N.J., the 599-passenger Franklin Delano Roosevelt was christened Thursday during a ceremony at Pier 79 in Midtown Manhattan.The FDR is powered by low-emission 2,000-horsepower twin EPA Tier 3 compliant engines and has a service speed of 21 knots. The FDR is 109 feet long and 32 feet wide and draws just six feet of water depth.The new vessel has already seen a lot of action.

More Danube Cruises Affected by Low Water Levels

At least 20 river cruises have been affected in Germany on the Danube and Elbe rivers after lower than normal water levels have forced some cruise lines to undertake complex logistical maneuvers to keep tours running. Some Cruises have had to alter their itineraries. Cruise Critic will continue to monitor water levels in the regions and update you with further reports. Viking Cruises has seen more than a dozen of its itineraries affected, and maintains an updated list on its website. In addition to "ship swaps" -- where the line undertakes a passenger exchange (usually via bus) between two ships positioned on either side of an impassable stretch of river -- at least one cruise has been more severely affected.

Scenic Tours Orders Three Ships

Australian-owned tour operator Scenic Tours has announced the formation of its European operations company Scenic Tours Europe AG that will be based in Zug, Switzerland. It is a venture that will mean that it is the only 100 percent Australian-owned river cruising company in Europe. To kick off the operations, three luxury river cruise ships will be delivered into the hands of the new company in 2008/09. The AUD$78 million order for the ms Scenic Sapphire, Scenic Emerald and Scenic Diamond will be the highest standard river cruise ships ever built in Europe.
