Yara Marine Has Big Expectations for 2019
Many shipowners are scrambling to comply with the tough, new the International Maritime Organization (IMO) fuel global sulfur limit of 0.50 percent m/m, which takes effect January 1, 2020.It is expected that after the rules swing into force, the light-heavy fuel price spread will likely spike and refining margins will be higher, particularly for complex refineries.Shipowners have to stay ahead of the game, said Yara Marine Technologies CEO Peter Strandberg: “Shipowners often get a bad rap of refusing to adopt new, innovative technologies and processes.
Newport Shipping Buys 100 Scrubbers
Newport Shipping Group has purchased 100 scrubbers from Chinese manufacturer Weihai Puyi Marine Environmental Technology Co, with options for an additional 100 units.Newport, which operates a network of 13 drydocks globally, said the bulk purchase aims to safeguard shipowners against any price hikes or production bottlenecks as demand for scrubbers is expected to increase ahead of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) 2020 sulphur cap deadline.Erol Sarikaya, Newport Shipping Chief Executive Officer…
Alfa Laval PureSOx Platform Offers Dual-compliance
The Alfa Laval PureSOx platform is expanding to provide not only 0.1%S compliance for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), but also 0.5%S compliance with the coming global sulphur cap. With the option of a dual-compliance system as well, customers can choose the best scrubber solution to match their sailing profile. The Alfa Laval PureSOx platform is already the most proven and customer-adapted exhaust gas cleaning solution on the market. Regardless whether the MEPC implements the 0.5%S global cap in 2020 or 2025, the platform is now expanding to address an even greater range of customer needs.
Grimaldi Places 10th PureSOx Scrubber Order
Alfa Laval reports its scrubber solution PureSOx has been the subject of many repeat orders. One of the major returning customers is the Grimaldi Group, which has now ordered its 10th installation of Alfa Laval’s exhaust gas cleaning system. The Grimaldi Group is a multinational logistics group specialized in the operation of RoRo vessels, car carriers and ferries. Through the maritime services of Atlantic Container Line, Finnlines and its other companies, the Naples-based group transports passengers, nearly any type of rolling cargo as well as containers and general cargo.
TransAtlantic Scrubber for SECA 2015
TransAtlantic and Stora Enso have signed and started the installation of the first order of a new innovative scrubber that washes out sulphur oxides from ship exhaust gases in a totally closed loop. It has taken years to find a solution that is able to coop with the fresh water and ice conditions in the Bothnia Bay during winter. It has been important to find a solution that not only meets the operation requirements but also high demands on sustainability. A closed loop has been one of the main criteria…
Bore RoRo Ship to Get DeltaLangh Scrubber System
DeltaLangh has been assigned to deliver Deltamarin Floating Construction Ltd. with an exhaust gas cleaning (scrubber) system to be installed onboard the Ro-Ro vessel M/V Bore Song of Bore Ltd. The delivery consists of a combined closed and open loop scrubber system for 12MW engine output with the patented water treatment and dewatering plant. M/V Bore Song operates in the English Channel which is a part of the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA). From January 2015 all ships operating in the SECA area must limit their emissions to correspond to the use of fuel with a sulphur content of less than 0.1%. With the help of the DeltaLangh scrubber M/V Bore Song will meet these requirements.
Desulfurization of Exhaust Gases in Shipping
Are shipowners prepared to enter SECA zones? Due to existing regulations on air exhaust emissions from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and with the European Union working towards an alignment with IMO MARPOL Annex VI, the marine industry will need to choose a path on how to achieve compliance, a choice that will have tremendous impact on shipping. Legislation has already had an effect on the fuel markets in regulated areas, as fuel prices are expected to increase even further in 2015 when the 0.1% fuel sulfur limit enters into force.
DeltaLangh Brings Closed Loop Scrubber to the Market
Deltamarin Ltd. and Oy Langh Ship Ab have come together to offer a cost effective and reliable solution to the sulphur requirements with the scrubber that Langh Ship has developed. The new scrubber is delivered by a joint venture company DeltaLangh Ltd., and it can also be supplied on a turnkey basis. As the new sulphur directive in the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) comes into force in 2015, shipping companies are forced to choose a method to tackle the challenge. The new scrubber solution offered by DeltaLangh…
EU Backs Shipping Emissions Studies
The European Union will support with €6.7 million from the TEN-T Program a series of studies followed by real life trials to evaluate a new generation lightweight pilot scrubber solution for ro-ro (roll on, roll off) ships. The initiative also contributes to the realization of the “Motorways of the Sea” (TEN-T Priority Project 21) concept. The studies, selected for funding under the 2012 TEN-T Multi-Annual Program, will assess, install, demonstrate and evaluate a new generation of innovative lightweight scrubber technology on two existing ro-ro vessels operating in the Baltic and North Sea. Three EU Member States – Sweden, Finland and…

S3 Smart Sulphur Switch
The S3 system distinguishes itself through its ability to always blend and adjust two fuels to the desired sulphur content as well as documenting sulphur content, enabling monitoring and control of sulphur emissions. The primary market for the S3 Smart Sulphur Switch is for vessels that occasionally need to enter an ECA meaning that the investment in a scrubber solution is not viable. The secondary market is for vessels, for example ferry operators in the Baltic who choose to install scrubbers that cannot handle more than 2% sulphur content due to space considerations.
Algoma Selects Wärtsilä for Propulsion Installs
Algoma Central Corporation has chosen Wärtsilä to supply complete propulsion systems with integrated scrubbers for six Great Lakes vessels. The full propulsion system with integrated fresh water scrubber lowers operating costs while reducing the vessel's environmental footprint by allowing owners to use high sulphur fuels in Emission Control Area (ECA) Zones and meet sulphur emissions restrictions. This represents the first order for the new integrated Wärtsilä scrubber concept.
Wärtsilä Scrubber for Containerships Ltd
Wärtsilä has signed a turnkey contract with Containerships Ltd Oy. The agreement covers the retrofitting of a Wärtsilä fresh water scrubber for the vessel Containerships VII, which is equipped with a Wärtsilä W7L64 main engine. This is Wärtsilä's first commercial marine scrubber project for a main engine. The scrubber will be delivered to the customer in August 2011. The conversion will enable the vessel to meet future sulphur oxides (SOx) emission requirements in Sulphur Emission Control Areas.
