Wärtsilä received its first order for carbon capture and storage-ready scrubber systems - CCS-Ready scrubbers.Wärtsilä said that four 8,200 TEU container vessels, being built at undisclosed Asian-based yard, would be fitted with Wärtsilä’s CCS-Ready 35MW scrubber in an open loop configuration.The scrubbers are termed CCS-Ready because, as part of their installation, Wärtsilä will perform additional design and engineering work to ensure that future retrofits for a full CCS system on the vessels have already been accounted for during the newbuilding construction stage…

Finland-based Valmet said it has booked an order with Japan's Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Shimonoseki Shipyard to deliver hybrid scrubber systems and water treatment units to two ferries. Each vessel will be equipped with two identical Valmet Marine Scrubber towers for each main engine and a water treatment unit as well as Valmet’s marine automation system. The order value was not disclosed. The vessels will be delivered from Mitsubishi Shimonoseki shipyard to Meimon Taiyo Ferry Co., Ltd.

Stena Bulk has signed a turnkey exhaust gas scrubber solution agreement with Chinese Bluesoul to equip its Suezmax and IMOIIMAX fleets. In total, Stena Bulk will equip 15 vessels with scrubbers and have an additional six options for installation prior to 2020.The scrubber to be installed is an Open Loop Hybrid Ready with Water Cleaning, which not only removes the sulfur but also particles from the exhaust.Shanghai Bluesoul Environment Technology, with its base in Shanghai, has had a collaboration agreement with the Stena Group for more than a year.

Alfa Laval reports its scrubber solution PureSOx has been the subject of many repeat orders. One of the major returning customers is the Grimaldi Group, which has now ordered its 10th installation of Alfa Laval’s exhaust gas cleaning system. The Grimaldi Group is a multinational logistics group specialized in the operation of RoRo vessels, car carriers and ferries. Through the maritime services of Atlantic Container Line, Finnlines and its other companies, the Naples-based group transports passengers, nearly any type of rolling cargo as well as containers and general cargo.

TransAtlantic and Stora Enso have signed and started the installation of the first order of a new innovative scrubber that washes out sulphur oxides from ship exhaust gases in a totally closed loop. It has taken years to find a solution that is able to coop with the fresh water and ice conditions in the Bothnia Bay during winter. It has been important to find a solution that not only meets the operation requirements but also high demands on sustainability. A closed loop has been one of the main criteria, which means that removed sulphur stays on board and is delivered ashore for waste extraction. The difficult operational conditions at TransAtlantic´s core markets are for example tough ice conditions and winter climate.

DeltaLangh has been assigned to deliver Deltamarin Floating Construction Ltd. with an exhaust gas cleaning (scrubber) system to be installed onboard the Ro-Ro vessel M/V Bore Song of Bore Ltd. The delivery consists of a combined closed and open loop scrubber system for 12MW engine output with the patented water treatment and dewatering plant. M/V Bore Song operates in the English Channel which is a part of the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA). From January 2015 all ships operating in the SECA area must limit their emissions to correspond to the use of fuel with a sulphur content of less than 0.1%. With the help of the DeltaLangh scrubber M/V Bore Song will meet these requirements.

Are shipowners prepared to enter SECA zones? Due to existing regulations on air exhaust emissions from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and with the European Union working towards an alignment with IMO MARPOL Annex VI, the marine industry will need to choose a path on how to achieve compliance, a choice that will have tremendous impact on shipping. Legislation has already had an effect on the fuel markets in regulated areas, as fuel prices are expected to increase even further in 2015 when the 0.1% fuel sulfur limit enters into force.

The European Union will support with €6.7 million from the TEN-T Program a series of studies followed by real life trials to evaluate a new generation lightweight pilot scrubber solution for ro-ro (roll on, roll off) ships. The initiative also contributes to the realization of the “Motorways of the Sea” (TEN-T Priority Project 21) concept. Alfa Laval won a repeat order for its PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems valued at approximately €19.5 million from Danish ferry operator DFDS. The contract was signed in June, and the order was booked and communicated to stakeholders in the second quarter of 2013. Delivery is scheduled from January to July 2014 with retrofit installation and commissioning of eight DFDS vessels – five roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels and three roll-on/roll-off passenger (Ro-Pax) vessels – to follow immediately thereafter.

The S3 system distinguishes itself through its ability to always blend and adjust two fuels to the desired sulphur content as well as documenting sulphur content, enabling monitoring and control of sulphur emissions. The primary market for the S3 Smart Sulphur Switch is for vessels that occasionally need to enter an ECA meaning that the investment in a scrubber solution is not viable. The secondary market is for vessels, for example ferry operators in the Baltic who choose to install scrubbers that cannot handle more than 2% sulphur content due to space considerations.

Algoma Central Corporation has chosen Wärtsilä to supply complete propulsion systems with integrated scrubbers for six Great Lakes vessels. The full propulsion system with integrated fresh water scrubber lowers operating costs while reducing the vessel's environmental footprint by allowing owners to use high sulphur fuels in Emission Control Area (ECA) Zones and meet sulphur emissions restrictions. This represents the first order for the new integrated Wärtsilä scrubber concept.

Wärtsilä has signed a turnkey contract with Containerships Ltd Oy. The agreement covers the retrofitting of a Wärtsilä fresh water scrubber for the vessel Containerships VII, which is equipped with a Wärtsilä W7L64 main engine. This is Wärtsilä's first commercial marine scrubber project for a main engine. The scrubber will be delivered to the customer in August 2011. The conversion will enable the vessel to meet future sulphur oxides (SOx) emission requirements in Sulphur Emission Control Areas.
