DNV Merges Its Cyber Security Arms

DNV announced it has merged its existing cyber security business with two recently acquired companies, Nixu and Applied Risk.The merger brings together more than 500 cyber security experts to safeguard IT and industrial control system environments across multiple industries, including maritime and offshore energy. It follows DNV’s acquisition of Amsterdam-based industrial cyber security specialist Applied Risk in 2021, and the conclusion of DNV’s acquisition of Helsinki-headquartered cyber security services leader Nixu in December 2023.“Cyber security is a defining risk for the coming decade.

USCG Approves ABS Wavesight eLogs for US-flagged Vessels

ABS Wavesight on Thursday announced its eLogs software has received formal approval from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) for use by U.S.-flagged ships. ClassNK Updates Ship Maintenance Checklist

Classification society ClassNK has released the latest version of Good Maintenance Onboard Ships (October, 2017), a checklist designed to be used by ship masters, crew, ship owners and other key personnel to ensure vessels are safe, well-maintained and comply with regulations. ClassNK’s Director of Survey Operations Division, Yoshinori Kozeki, said, “This easy-to-use checklist is a result of our ongoing commitment to improve the safety of life and property at sea, and the prevention of pollution of the marine environment. The latest edition of Good Maintenance Onboard Ships includes clear explanations, photo examples as well as guidance on the latest updates in the industry.

ClassNK Sets up Industry's first Digital Archive Center

ClassNK has established ClassNK Archive Center (NKAC), the maritime industry’s first onshore digital archive center that fully complies with IMO Goal-based ship construction standards (GBS) and the Industry Standard, which begin to apply from today. IMO GBS are broad, over-arching safety and environmental standards that ships are required to meet during their operational lifetime. The new SOLAS regulation II-1/3-10 made GBS applicable to bulk carriers and oil tankers of 150m in length and above for which the building contract is placed on or after 1 July 2016. The new regulation requires that a Ship Construction File (SCF) be provided upon delivery of a new ship and kept on board the ship and/or ashore.

DNV GL, Tsakos Join Forces on Cyber Safety

The Tsakos Group of Companies has selected DNV GL to assist in preparing a cybersecurity management system for its fleet and onshore facilities – the first such management system developed by a shipping company in cooperation with DNV GL’s Advisory Services. The Greek shipping organization will implement a comprehensive system of safeguards and procedures to protect their assets from cyber risks. DNV GL is the first classification society to put this kind of cybersecurity service into practice. “We wanted to assure our charterers and customers that our systems would be adequately protected from cyber risks by implementing the highest standards of cybersecurity on board our vessels and on shore.

Port Security goes High Tech in South Africa

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) introduced a new port security system valued at more than $53 million to safeguard customer cargo, port users, as well as Transnet’s own port assets, staff and contractors. Phumuzi Sigasa, head of TNPA’s Port Security Portfolio added: “In conformance with regulations and our own Integrated Security Management Systems - Security Strategy Plan, we are rolling out an upgraded security system across our eight South African commercial ports and our head office in Johannesburg.

ClassNK Updates Ship Maintenance Checklist

ClassNK has released the latest version of Good Maintenance Onboard Ships (January, 2015), a checklist designed to be used by shipmasters, crew, shipowners and other key personnel to ensure vessels are safe, well-maintained and comply with regulations. To further improve the quality and efficiency of maintenance onboard ships, ClassNK said it has incorporated its knowledge and experience gained through surveys and audits, feedback from Port State Control (PSC) inspections, and comments from shipowners and mariners to provide the most up-to-date checklists for Routine Maintenance, PSC Inspections, Safety Management Systems, Ship Security Management Systems, as well as photos of the most common deficiencies.

Protection Vessels International Achieves LRQA Accreditation

Private maritime security services provider, Protection Vessels International (PVI), part of Protection Group International, informs that it has achieved ISO/PAS 28007 certification from Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA). PVI was one of the first private maritime security companies (PMSCs) to participate in the ISO/PAS 28007 pilot scheme which aims to set the benchmark for PMSCs who want to demonstrate to the international community that they, and the operatives they supply, are of the right quality to legally, safely and effectively guard commercial shipping on the high seas.

Port2Port completes Pilot Audit of the ISO/PAS 28007

Port2Port Maritime has completed a pilot audit assessment for ISO/PAS 28007. After a rigorous and meticulously detailed, top down validation process conducted from the company headquarters to overseas operating locations and out to the point of embarkation, Port2Port Maritime has demonstrated compliance with this new management system specification. ISO 28000 is based upon a management system for the delivery of risk management services and mirrors much of the process contained in ISO 9001.

PVI, Lloyd’s to Undertake ISO/PAS 28007 Certification

Protection Vessels International Limited (PVI) and Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) announced an agreement for PVI to take part in the ISO 28000/28007 pilot scheme. The pilot scheme is due to commence in the next few weeks and will include an initial assessment of the PVI ISO28000 and ISO28007 PAS management systems. In initial discussions between PVI and LRQA regarding the ISO/PAS 28007 pilot scheme, the companies agreed the importance of promoting the correct route to certification; that being through the ISO28000 Security Management Systems for the Supply Chain base standard taken together with requirements of ISO PAS 28007 which should be conducted by a certification body accredited by UKAS.

As the first liner shipping company worldwide Hapag-Lloyd has today been awarded the GL Excellence – 5 Stars newly introduced by Germanischer Lloyd. The award is for the introduction of high standards of safety and security, environment and quality. The certificate was awarded by Germanischer Lloyd (GL), one of the world’s leading classification societies. GL provides a kind of ships’ validation, surveying the technical safety of ships, issuing building regulations, monitoring the construction of newbuildings and certifying building units and materials. Over and above this GL carries out mandatory duties, for example with safety and security management systems for flag states.

ABS Audits Univan Tanker

Hong Kong based Univan Shipmanagement becomes the latest organization to achieve certification from class society ABS in order to meet the IMO’s International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code in preparation for the July 2004 implementation date. Univan Ship Management and its sister company Pacific Marine, together manage a diverse fleet of over one hundred vessels comprising tankers, bulk carriers, pure car carriers, chemical tankers, container carriers, general cargo vessels, reefers, supply vessels and woodchip carriers.
