Huge Greenland Iron-ore Mine & Terminal Contract Awarded
Greenland has awarded UK-based company London Mining a 30-year licence to build and run a giant iron ore mine, but some opponents say the open-cast mine will cause environmental damage; others are concerned about plans to bring in up to 3,000 mainly Chinese workers, reports BBC News. London Mining has been awarded an exclusive 30 year exploitation licence for its 100% owned Isua Project in Greenland. This licence is a significant step in the process of seeking partners for the development of Isua.
Celebrity Cruises To Add Second Ship Year-Round In Caribbean 2003
Celebrity Cruises will devote a second ship to the Caribbean for the 2003 summer season to accommodate a continued demand for its Caribbean product. Century, currently sailing seven-night eastern and western Caribbean itineraries from Port Everglades, was originally scheduled to redeploy to Europe next summer, then resume her Caribbean sailings next Fall. Century now will sail the Caribbean year-round, joining sister-ship Galaxy. Celebrity will continue to operate two ships, Millennium and Constellation, next year in Europe. In addition, sister brand, Royal Caribbean International, will sail three ships, Splendour of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, and Grandeur of the Seas, from European ports.

USS Essex Wins Energy Conservation Award
The Secretary of the Navy recently presented the Energy Conservation (ENCON) award winners for FY2002 in ceremonies conducted at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. USS Essex (LHD 2) was among these prestigious award winners. These Navy and Marine Corps activities were singled out for executing comprehensive conservation programs based on senior-level command involvement, well-staffed and trained energy teams, aggressive awareness campaigns, investigation and execution of innovative energy conservation measures, and consistent reduction in energy consumption. Cruise Season Gets Underway in the Port of Kiel
“AIDAcara” is first to call at the Ostseekai Terminal. The 2013 cruise shipping year opened in Kiel on April 13 when the first ship of the season, AIDAcara, arrived at the Ostseekai from Dover. She berthed at around 0900 at the cruise shipping terminal after earlier being treated to a water fountain display from an SFK tug when she left the Kiel Canal. Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel said, “We are well prepared for the cruise shipping season. Everything is ready at Kiel’s cruise shipping terminal.” A total of 128 calls by 21 different ships have been registered this season.
Carnival Extends Deal with Port of New Orleans
The Port of New Orleans and Carnival Cruise Lines signed a new agreement that will keep the world’s largest cruise line sailing at least two ships year-round from New Orleans through 2019. The new agreement supersedes a 2013 three-year extension and offers three one-year options that could guarantee Carnival homeports at least two ships of equal or greater size than the Dream Class and Fantasy Class ships sailing from the Port today through 2022. The new agreement began July 1, 2014.
Navy Energy Conservation Awards Announced

Using Incentivized ENCON Energy Awareness, the fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships. In ship operating terms, this is equivalent to 22 “ship years” of underway steaming using energy conservation initiatives provided by NAVSEA’s ENCON Team.
World Trade in Perishable Cargo to Grow
The Drewry Shipping Consultants, latest Annual Report indicates that world trade in perishable Reefer cargo is forecast to grow to 215 million tons by 2015 of which 109 million will be seaborne. The bulk of seaborne trade will be carried by container Reefer vessels. That is partially because there is limited, and reducing, specialized reefer fleet capacity. The report indicates that rationalization has continued over the last year amongst Reefer fleets with some notable companies leaving the specialized sector. Clearly there is a capacity problem for specialized vessels whereas Reefer containers have a real business opportunity if the former cannot bridge the capacity gap. By mid-2008, the container Reefer fleet boasted more than 4,500 vessels providing 11.4 million teu.

During FY 2003, Commander, Pacific Fleet (COMPAC) and Commander, Atlantic Fleet (COMLANT) ships, even during this high level operational era, avoided the consumption of many thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity. Using energy education, the Fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships.
MCA Delivers Study Results on Bulk Carrier Safety
Extensive work on bulk carrier safety coordinated by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) with international participation is now complete, and a final report of the study results has been submitted to the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for consideration at their meeting on December 2nd to December 13th 2002. The United Kingdom has been fully committed to addressing bulk carrier safety following the loss of the MV Derbyshire in 1980 with the loss of 44 lives. Bulk carrier safety has a poor record with over 500 ship casualties resulting in the loss of more than 2000 lives in the period from 1978 to the present date.
Recommendations for Safe, Efficient LNG Bunkering
One of the key hurdles to the increased global use of ships fuelled by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is the lack of harmonization of bunkering operations. “DNV GL is therefore today launching a Recommended Practice for authorities, LNG bunker suppliers and ship operators which provides guidance on how LNG bunkering can be undertaken in a safe and efficient manner,” said Lars Petter Blikom, DNV GL’s LNG director. LNG-fuelled ships have logged over 130 ship-years of operation in Norwegian waters and LNG’s attractiveness and stability as a fuel have been thoroughly demonstrated. Globally too, operators, suppliers and regulators have gained significant experience in all aspects of LNG-fuelled ship operations in recent years.
Hapag-Lloyd: Shipping Demand Up, More Mergers in 2018
German shipping group Hapag-Lloyd sees demand for transport growing 4 percent in 2018 and expects more shipping firms to merge in the year, the chief executive said. CEO Chief Executive Rolf Habben Jansen also said Hapag-Lloyd, which merged with its Arab peer UASC, could achieve 85 to 90 percent of targeted annual savings from the deal of $435 million this year and 100 percent from 2019. More savings could be made in future, he told reporters in Hamburg, where he reiterated guidance for rising full-year 2017 earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) and for EBIT.
LNG Market Poised for Massive Growth
There has been plenty of talk recently about the birth of a spot and short-term charter market for lng carriers. Indeed some LNGoperators have formed strategic alliances to prepare for these potentially new trades. However, R.S.Platou Shipbrokers of Norway believes that the volume of LNGtonnage currently on order could yet force some owners to work short-term deals by the end of this decade whether they like it or not. According to the broker’s statistics, some 60 new LNG carriers will have been ordered during this year and, by the end of November, the orderbook consisted of 104 vessels equivalent to about 80% of the existing fleet.
G2 Ocean Names Wallem
Wallem Ship Agency has been appointed by G2 Ocean to provide Ship Agency services to all their vessels calling in ports in SE Asia. The agreement has been made with Wallem Ship Agency in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and Myanmar. This news comes after Wallem was appointed by G2 Ocean back in July of 2017 for calls to China, totaling an estimated number of 700 calls per year. Global Ship Lease Eyes Acquisitions
The London-based Global Ship Lease (GSL) said that it is well-positioned as one of few publicly listed containership leasing companies to acquire attractive portfolios of ships, attract growth capital or find a complementary merger partner. The containership charter owner has engaged Evercore to act as financial advisor to assist in reviewing strategic alternatives focused on maximizing shareholder value. GSL has successfully refinanced of all of the its indebtedness in October 2017 and with a strengthening market backdrop.
Gas Natural Fenosa, Baleària Sign LNG Bunkering Deal
Spanish liquefied natural gas (LNG) operator Gas Natural Fenosa signed an exclusive 10-year LNG supply deal with Spanish ferry operator Baleària. According to the company release, the supply contract will initially apply to the ports of Barcelona, Valencia and Algeciras, then extended to all the peninsular ports operated by the shipping company together with the entire new fleet powered by this fuel committed to using LNG as an ecological fuel. Port of Rotterdam: 2017 in Review
Over the past year, 29,646 seagoing vessels entered the port of Rotterdam, up more than 600 from 2016's 29,022. The number of incidents in the port fell from 159 to 129, and included one ‘serious accident’ involving an inland vessel that went adrift after hitting a groyne with its rudder. Chevron Shipping Awards Oil, LNG Contract to GAC
US-based Chevron Shipping Company (CSC) has awarded the Dubai-based GAC Group a global three-year ship agency contract for both crude and LNG vessels. The new agreement secures the provider of shipping, logistics and marine services GAC’s status as Chevron’s exclusive global agent in a partnership that spans more than 20 years, more than 15 of which have seen GAC as its sole global agent. Operations will be overseen by GAC Hub Agency offices in Dubai, Houston and Singapore with support from GAC’s network of offices and approved agents worldwide.
Finland Concerned over Rise in Russia's Cargo Ship Inspections
The Finnish government has voiced concern over surprise inspections on Finnish cargo ships visiting Russian ports in recent weeks, saying delays had been a problem for shipping companies. Neighboring Russia carried out seven thorough inspections in the past two weeks on Finnish ships at St Petersburg and other ports, without giving a specific reason, a government minister said on Friday. Asbestos: Maritime’s Ticking Time Bomb
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) should amend regulations banning the use of asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACM) in ships, says John Chillingworth, senior marine principal at Lucion Marine. Regulations under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) state that if asbestos is found onboard a ship built after July 2002 then the vessel’s flag registry, in conjunction with its classification society, issues a non-extendable exemption certificate, providing the owner with a three-year window in which to remove the asbestos.
