MR spoke with Shravan Rewari, CEO, for his insights on technologies and technique moving the maritime simulation markets. Kongsberg Maritime Simulation & Training and Maersk Supply Service entered into an agreement to further develop the existing cooperation in simulator development between the two companies. The focus of the agreement will be the development of a unique anchor handling simulator, which will use the technology and experience the two companies have gained over 10 years of collaboration in the field of marine simulation. "The anchor handling simulator software must be developed to meet some very specific needs so by extending our co-operation agreement we can be sure that our requirements for a flexible and scalable solution are met, in what is a very sophisticated simulation product," said Albertus Zwiers, Director Technical Vessel Operations, Maersk Supply Service.

Transas has commercially launched the latest version of its Engine Room Simulator, ERS 4000. The new simulator is enhanced with a number of new significant capabilities aimed at satisfying the increasing demands of users of this kind of simulation product. The modified ERS 4000 simulator features a modern design for the dedicated hardware set with new control panels, and some essential improvements have been made to the simulator’s functionality. One of these is the new configuration for the Electric Power Plant, which now includes Steam Turbo-generator and the updated Steam Plant.

The accurate mathematical ship models incorporated in the simulator have been improved and extended by the new vessel types, Tanker LCC and Trawler.

Kongsberg Maritime launched of Polaris 4.4.0, the latest version of its Polaris bridge simulation architecture. simulation systems or multi-channel full mission simulators based on real-life bridge consoles and layouts. "As one of the major players in maritime training, Kongsberg Maritime is constantly upgrading its simulation equipment and software in order to provide colleges and students with the most realistic experience that technology will allow," states Per Branstad, VP Simulation, Kongsberg Maritime.

Transas UK has won a competitive tender for the design, supply and installation of a new simulation complex at the North Atlantic Fisheries College, Scalloway, Shetland. According to this contract, in early 2002, Transas will replace the customer’s existing Norcontrol simulation facilities. The new complex will comprise a full mission bridge simulator, with 180 degree visual system, including two ARPA radars /ECDIS /conning and ship controls. In addition, the latest sophisticated Transas CCTV-type visual system used for berthing operations and providing the over-ship’s side view, is included in the scope of supply. Two other visual bridges will be supplied as parts of a fully interactive bridge training center.

Today, we live in a new era of global maritime standards, with the advent of ISO, ISM, and STCW-95. The industry has embraced these standards as mechanisms to ensure that corporate policy, company operational procedures, and mariners sailing on the open seas are measured and certified. Old internal practices have been done away with, and the new standard within the industry is to certify compliance in companies and aboard ships. At the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) and Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI), it is our business to train professional mariners. Our curriculum has been structured to exceed the standards of STCW and to provide mariners with the most realistic and technically advanced training available.

In July of 2002, the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College awarded the Buffalo Computer Graphics / Transas Marine USA team the contract for replacement of their existing full mission ship simulator. The simulator system includes a comprehensive Instructor control, monitoring and debriefing station, along with a seven visual channel full mission main bridge simulator designed to meet DNV Class ‘A’ navigational simulator standards. At the core of the system is Transas Marine’s industry leading Navi Trainer Professional simulation software with a comprehensive set of highly detailed vessel and geographic models. The bridge is designed to be flexible enough to be adapted for a number of specific marine training programs in the future and includes stimulated ARPA/Radar units…

Transas has successfully completed the installation of a new simulation complex at the North Atlantic Fisheries College in Scalloway, Shetland. The new installation replaces the existing Norcontrol simulator. This new advanced complex at the forefront of simulation technology employs the latest NT Pro 4000 software offering a very high training potential. The complex includes a Transas full mission bridge simulator equipped with two ARPA radars / ECDIS / conning and ship controls, 210-degree visualisation and two additional bridges developed to operate as separate vessels and aimed at complex specialised pilotage/tug operations training in conjunction with the main bridge.
