NSSLGlobal Trials Wi-Fi with British Royal Navy

Satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal announced the trial of its Wi-Fi service across selected British Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships. The service, based on NSSLGlobal’s proven technology for the commercial shipping sector, but modified for the Royal Navy will, for the first time allow crew to use their personal devices to connect with friends and family through internet services and applications. The Wi-Fi service is an all-in-one access control facility deployed as a gateway for managing Wi-Fi hotspots to enable BYOD (Bring your own Device) to be rolled out to Naval vessels. It will provide the user with a secure, available, supported and legally and morally compliant internet service providing access over existing ship bearers (whether satellite, ADSL or 3G/4G).

Cruise Companies Prepare for Wireless Wave

It is estimated that within the next four years, wireless carriers will need to find a way to transmit more than 30 times the volume of data than their networks carry today. A revolution is taking place, and it is going to hit the cruise industry. MCP confirmed that its first 3G-vessel project, to be finalized in August this year, is being driven by passenger use of social media applications such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. “Cruise companies have to get ready for the next wave,” said Roar Walderhaug, senior vice president for MCP. “Today’s mobile device has evolved from a phone into a robust communications tool. Cruise ships must be able to handle a broadening range of mobile applications down the road,” said Walderhaug.

Maritime Cabotage Task Force is now American Maritime Partnership

American Maritime Partnership (AMP) is the new name for the Maritime Cabotage Task Force, the largest coalition of maritime interests in the United States, which has been in operation since 1995. The new moniker better reflects the coalition’s focus on the domestic maritime industry’s role in promoting national, homeland, and economic security. To increase awareness of itself in the social media world, AMP has launched a new website (www.americanmaritimepartnership.com), and has new social media applications on Facebook and Twitter. “A strong domestic maritime industry is critical to our national security, makes our homeland more secure, and fosters nearly 500,000 American jobs,” said James Henry, President of the Transportation Institute and Chairman of the Board of Directors of AMP.
