World's First: Wartsila Intros Hybrid Retrofit

The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with the international shipping company Hagland Shipping AS for a hybrid retrofit installation.The project will take place onboard the ‘Hagland Captain’, a general cargo vessel owned by Hagland Shipping. It will be the first project of its kind ever in short-sea shipping applications. The agreement was signed in December 2018.The installation of a Wärtsilä battery hybrid propulsion solution will significantly enhance the ship’s environmental performance by reducing its emissions, fuel consumption, and noise. Wärtsilä Inks 10-year Maintenance Deal with Virgin Voyages

Cruise line Virgin Voyages has assigned Wärtsilä the responsibility of the maintenance of its three brand new cruise ships due to enter service in 2020, 2021 and 2022.The comprehensive 10-year Optimized Maintenance Agreement, signed on April 30, 2018, gives extensive responsibility of maintenance to Wärtsilä, who will ensure that vessels are powered and operated reliably, efficiently and sustainably.Wärtsilä’s Dynamic Maintenance Planning allows maintenance operations to be carried out based on remotely monitored and analyzed real-time performance data.

Wärtsilä Acquires Trident B.V.

Wärtsilä said it has acquired Netherland based Trident B.V., a specialist in underwater ship maintenance, inspection and repair services. The acquisition is expected to close in January 2018. The enterprise value of the transaction is €17.5 million ($20.8 million) and an additional €3.5 million ($4.2 million) earn-out, based on the business performance in the coming years. Wärtsilä Selected to ESI Excellence Europe

Wärtsilä has been selected as a constituent of the Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Europe with effect from 23 March 2015. This is a remarkable continuation to the recognition  Wärtsilä received from Forum Ethibel in September 2014, when Wärtsilä was included in the Ethibel EXCELLENCE Investment Register. The Index members are chosen from among those companies listed in the Ethibel Investment Registers. The ESI indices universe is composed of companies included in the Russell Global Index that display the best performance in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility. The Ethibel Sustainability Index Excellence Europe includes 200 top performing European companies in this field.

Wärtsilä Contracted by Vyborg Shipyard

Wärtsilä was contracted to supply integrated power and automation systems for two Russian icebreakers. Wärtsilä won the contract to supply integrated power and automation systems for two new icebreakers being built for a Russian state-owned enterprise by Vyborg Shipyard JSC, a long-time partner of Wärtsilä. The contract was signed in October 2012. The vessels, scheduled to be delivered in 2015, will operate mainly in the Baltic Sea and in Arctic waters. Wärtsilä's strong track record in supplying reliable and technically sound solutions for icebreakers, and other vessels operating in arctic conditions, was cited as being a key factor in the award of this contract. There is an option pending to supply similar equipment for a third icebreaker within this same project.

Wärtsilä & Robert Allan Cooperation Agreement

Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading ship power systems integrator, has signed a Letter of Intent with Canadian ship design company Robert Allan Ltd. to develop a Strategic Cooperation Agreement. Both parties see market opportunities for advanced tug designs, utilizing improved hull forms and new fully integrated power and propulsion technologies. The aim of the cooperation agreement will be to jointly develop advanced, environmentally sound solutions, resulting in a range of optimized tug designs to be supplied by Wärtsilä for the world market. Both Wärtsilä and Robert Allan Ltd. have developed their own plans for modernising and improving tug design, and see significant advantages in coordinating their R&D activities in a strategic cooperation.

Braemar Shipping Launches Braemar Marine

Braemar Shipping Services plc has launched a new subsidiary called Braemar Marine, which will provide diverse marine surveying and adjusting services to the global maritime, transportation risk and insurance markets. Braemar Marine commenced operations on August 1st, 2009 from its headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., USA, and has established offices in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Seattle and London to enhance existing group marine surveying and adjusting capabilities in Latin America, Australasia and the Far Fast. The operation is led by John Tirel, Executive Vice President, with the assistance of Chris Lunda, Vice President of Global Development. Both John and Chris are based in Atlanta. John Cole is Director of the London office.
