Southwest Marine to Provide Facilities for Knight & Carver
Knight & Carver YachtCenter of San Diego announced a teaming agreement with Southwest Marine that provides Knight & Carver full use of Southwest Marine’s dry-dock facilities to service vessels of virtually unlimited tonnage. Under the agreement, Knight & Carver will be able to use Southwest Marine’s facilities for large-vessel haulouts, with Knight & Carver’s work crews working at Southwest Marine on an as-needed basis. The two companies are located several miles from each other along the San Diego bay front. The teaming agreement, made jointly by Knight & Carver President/CEO Sampson A. Brown and Southwest Marine Vice President/Commercial Marketing Alex Vinck, takes effect immediately.
United Defense Shipyard Receives EPA Award
United Defense announced the presentation of an environmental stewardship award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to Southwest Marine (SWM), its San Diego, Calif., shipyard. EPA Chief of Staff Thomas J. Gibson presented the award to SWM for the company's “outstanding voluntary contributions to environmental protection.” Southwest Marine played a key role, partnering with the EPA, in the development of an Environmental Management Systems Guide. This guide provides a plan for the shipbuilding and ship repair industry to help eliminate or greatly reduce potential sources of environmental pollution during the production process.
Southwest Marine Gets Contract
Southwest Marine Inc., of San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $7,006,087 modification to a previously awarded cost-plus-award-fee contract to exercise an option for the post shakedown availability of the USS Howard (DDG 83). Work will be performed in San Diego, and is expected to be completed by April 2002. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.
Hanson Retires from San Francisco DryDock
Carl Hanson, president and general manager of San Francisco Drydock (SFD), one of seven United States Marine Repair (USMR)ship repair facilities , including Southwest Marine (SWM) and NORSHIPCO on the East Coast, has retired. He had been with the company since 1978. Due to his extensive shipyard knowledge and experience, he will remain involved with the company on a case-by-case consulting basis. Hanson's shipyard career began in San Diego, Calif., at Triple A South ship repair facility, where he gained hands-on knowledge as a ship superintendent. When SWM opened a facility in San Francisco in 1978, Hanson left Triple A and moved north to help with the start-up.
Southwest Marine Awarded Contract
Southwest Marine, Inc., San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $10,485,093 cost-plus-award-fee modification under a previously awarded contract (N62791-02-C-0067) to exercise an option for the dry-docking selected restricted availability of USS Lake Champlain (CG-57), which will include various machinery repairs, boiler work and shipalts. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by November 2002. Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The supervisor of shipbuilding, conversion and repair, USN, San Diego, Calif., is the contracting activity.

Southwest Marine Lands $54 Million Contract
The Navy has granted a $54 million, five-year continuous maintenance contract for work on DDG-51-class ships to Southwest Marine (SWM). USS Stetham is scheduled to arrive at the shipyard on September 26; the last ship included in the contract will be at the yard on July 12, 2006. The contract encompasses a total of 23 availabilities. The award, which includes 10 ships, also contains an option for USS Lassen in 2003 and USS Howard in 2004. The work package on each ship includes dry docking, shaft work, underwater hull painting, maintenance, various general repairs, electronic upgrades, structural piping work and alterations. Teaming up with SWM on this contract is Continental Maritime (CMSD), which offers the Navy resources additional to SWM's piers and dry dock.
Navy Awards Southwest Marine $100 Million Contract
The U.S. Navy granted a contract worth more than $100 million to Southwest Marine (SWM). The five-year, phased-maintenance contract is the follow-on to ships the company has been repairing since 1985, including USS Denver, USS MT. Vernon and USS Anchorage. SWM initially won the first LPD/LSD contract in 1985, followed by a second contract in 1990 and a third in 1995. This current contract, which is the company's fourth consecutive, has a total of 16 availabilities. The first scheduled nine-week availability included the drydocking of USS Denver this September. President Clinton is expected to sign the FY 01 $8.6 billion military construction bill by mid-July, which will allow for emergency supplemental funding for ship depot maintenance for FY 00.
Southwest Marine Gets $7.6M Contract
United Defense Industries has been awarded a $7.6 million cost-plus-award-fee contract by NAVSEA Washington, D.C., to its Southwest Marine (SWM) shipyard here for the post shakedown availability on USS Mustin (DDG 89). In addition to the Mustin, the contract includes options for DDG 91 and three other yet to be determined DDGs, the Navy's newest Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) destroyers, home ported in San Diego. If the Navy exercises all options, the total contract would reach $37,708,983. The contract is a follow-on to SWM's current five-year, five-ship contract awarded in 1999. With options, the last of the five ships in the series for this contract is scheduled to complete in December of 2008. Work on the Mustin will begin in January of 2004 and be completed in March 2004.
Plan Ended for New Port of L.A. Shipyard

United Defense Shipyard Wins Ship Repair Contract
United Defense Industries, Inc. announced today the U.S. Navy's award to Southwest Marine (SWM) of the advanced planning segment of the contract for dry docking and pier side work on the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG-57), a Ticonderoga-class Aegis cruiser home-ported in San Diego. Southwest Marine is a member of United States Marine Repair, Inc. (USMR), which was acquired by United Defense last month. The advanced planning segment of the contract is valued at $518,484. With funded options, the total contract value is in excess of $12 million. SWM is the prime contractor and has teamed with National Steel and Shipbuilding Company and Continental Maritime of San Diego to perform the work.
United States Marine Repair Promotes Dickinson
B. Edward Ewing, CEO of Norfolk-based United States Marine Repair (USMR), the largest non-nuclear ship repair, modernization and conversion company in the U.S., announced that Monty Dickinson will head USMR's West and Gulf Coast Shipyards. Dickinson joined USMR last January as president and general manager of the company's San Diego-based shipyard, Southwest Marine. SWM Wins Multi-Ship Multi-Option Contract
United Defense Industries, Inc. subsidiary, Southwest Marine (SWM), has been awarded a contract from the Navy for pre-production planning for the repair, alteration and dry docking of the USS SHRIKE (MHC 62). The contract follows SWM's current 5-year contract for repairs to the Mine Countermeasure (MCM) class of vessels. Work on the ship is scheduled to start on May 26, 2004, and complete on August 20, 2004. The last availability is scheduled to complete in August of 2008. This award is issued as part of a multi-ship, multi-option contract expected to help stabilize the current SWM workforce in Ingleside. If the Navy exercises all options, the total contract amount could exceed $30 million.
Northrop Grumman Awarded Multiship Contract
Northrop Grumman Corporation announced today that its Newport News sector has been awarded a multi-year, multiship contract by the U.S. Navy for nonpropulsion work on Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in San Diego through 2007. The contract is valued at approximately $150 million. Newport News will lead a team of San Diego-based contractors for the production work under contract. Steel and Shipbuilding Co., Pacific Ship Repair and Fabrication Inc., SouthWest Marine Inc., and Continental Maritime. United Defense Shipyard Awarded $4.45M Contract
United Defense Industries, Inc. announced the $4.45 million award to its subsidiary, Southwest Marine, by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair, San Diego, Calif., for the fixed-price Dry Docking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) on USS McCLUSKY (FFG-41). The ship, a Perry class guided missile frigate home-ported in San Diego, fulfills a Protection of Shipping mission as an Anti-Submarine Warfare combatant for amphibious expeditionary forces, underway replenishment groups and merchant convoys. The work is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2003, and be completed on March 19, 2003. The work package includes, but is not limited to, dry docking, underwater hull inspection, repairs to the potable water tank, ballast tank, fuel oil tank, superstructure and main propulsion shafting.

Houston-based J. Ray McDermott (J. L.A. Council Rejects Shipyard Plan, Protects Port Dredging
According to a Feb. 1 report from the Los Angeles Times, there will be no new ship-building and repair yard at the Port of Los Angeles at this time. The City Council voted to scuttle a $50m proposal by Gambol Industries to revive the former site of the Southwest Marine yard. The shipyard project was to create more than 1,000 jobs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners argued that the shipbuilding idea would interfere with a more urgent priority -- deepening the main channel at the port to accommodate a new generation of super-sized container vessels and keep the port globally competitive. Pacific and Southwest - A Coastal Shipyard Alliance
Pacific Shipyards Intl. has joined forces with Southwest Marine to carry out a five-year IDIQ contract for the U.S. Navy. The primary function of the contract, which was awarded by Naval Sea Systems Command is to accomplish Depot-Level maintenance and repair work at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard on surface ships homeported in Pearl Harbor. The availabilities include drydocking and pier side work. Pacific Shipyards, which is comprised of Honolulu Shipyard (HIS) and Honolulu Marine, formed an alliance called TEAM Hawaii to meld the resources and strengths of both companies in order to better serve the U.S. Navy. HSIwill serve as the primary contractor on the IDIQ contract and is providing local production workers from the community.
United Defense Completes Acquisition of Honolulu Shipyards Assets
United Defense Industries, Inc. has completed its acquisition of the U.S. Navy ship repair business of Honolulu Shipyard Inc. (HSI) for $16.1 million. HSI had revenues of $40 million in 2003. The new company, Hawaii Shipyards, Inc., will continue to partner with Southwest Marine (SWM), a unit of United States Marine Repair (USMR), a UDI subsidiary.
