Industrial chains for handling heavy loads are being produced for the first time from DSM’s ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMwPE) fiber, branded as Dyneema. DSM Dyneema has formed a strategic partnership with Load Solutions AS in Bergen, Norway, for development, manufacturing, sales and marketing of link chains made with Dyneema fiber. The chains, branded as TYCAN, are fabricated from webbings and have numerous economic, environmental and safety advantages over traditional chains that for centuries have been made in iron and steel.

Cavotec Wins Major Container Terminal Cable Reel Order
Cavotec wins major cable reel order for Sri Lanka container port. Cavotec has won a substantial order for power and spreader cable reels for ship-to shore (STS) container cranes from the world’s largest port equipment manufacturer ZPMC. This project will see Cavotec electrical power and spreader cable reels fitted to 12 STS cranes for the China Merchant container terminal in the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The cranes form an important element of the Colombo South Harbour Development Project, a $500-million initiative that is set to considerably enhance the capacity of Sri Lanka's main port. According to a report by the Xinhua news agency, the programme is the largest foreign direct investment project in Sri Lanka to date.
Smit Develops High-Powered Wreck Removal Cutting System
Smit Salvage has developed a new, patented wreck removal cutting system that is designed to be fast and cost effective, and was used during the successful recovery of the Russian submarine Kursk last year. The new system utilizes a special abrasive cutting wire — a series of grit-covered bushes mounted along a high-tension steel cable. This wire can then be positioned over a wreck and connected up to a drive system producing a sawing motion. Highly efficient, this cutting system can be used as an alternative option to the traditional chain-cutting method that uses heavy steel chains and floating sheerlegs. The cutting system was developed in association with Widia Nederland, a Rotterdam-based manufacturer of tungsten carbide tools, and T.N.O. Nederland.

Tata Steel today inaugurated its new £2 million offshore processing centre (OPC) at an event in Hartlepool attended by more than 40 leading business figures from the European renewable energy sector. Stolt Acquires Three Ships for European Fleet
Stolt Tankers B.V. has agreed to acquire three 5,800 dwt fully stainless steel parcel tankers from Odfjell Tankers AS. The ships, which were built in 1997-1998 and are sister ships of three tankers currently operated by Stolt Tankers, are expected to join the Stolt-Nielsen Inter-Europe Service by the end of August 2015. Further terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Commenting on the purchase, Hans P. Feringa, President of Stolt Tankers, said, "We are pleased to have acquired these well priced, high quality assets, which enhance the scale efficiency of our fleet of European regional parcel tankers. The three ships are highly specialised, with 20 duplex stainless steel tanks, ICE class 1A and fitted with nitrogen generators.

Indian order for Enclosed Ship Unloader
Cargotec has received an order for a Siwertell ship unloader type ST790-D from the Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), Paradeep Unit. The enclosed screw-type unloader will be used to discharge rock phosphate and sulfur at a rated capacity of 1,800 t/h. "IFFCO wanted a totally enclosed system for both environmental and safety reasons," said Anders Paulsson, Sales manager, Bulk handling. "The company specified a screw-type unloader for high efficiency and chose a Siwertell system from Cargotec because we have by far the most knowledge and experience of this technology - the first Siwertell system designated for sulphur was delivered in 1980. Cargotec's Siwertell Sulphur Safety System (4S) was developed to minimise the risk of explosions and detect fires.

The arrival of the 655-foot bulk carrier M/V Irma at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor signals the official opening of the port’s international shipping season. Port officials welcomed 2015's first ocean vessel on Monday with a ceremony presenting the Ports of Indiana "Steel Stein" to the ship's captain. China Iron Ore Imports Rise in September
Chinese iron ore imports rose in September, according to Reuters data, as its steelmakers ramped up output in the face of global trade tensions about the country's steel exports. Thomson Reuters Supply Chain and Commodity Forecasts data showed 82.5 million tonnes of iron ore, which is used in steelmaking, arrived at Chinese ports in September - up 2.5 percent on August and not far off July's near record levels. The data, based on ship tracking and port figures, does not completely tally with official Chinese customs figures, but typically doesn't vary from them by more than 4 percent. China, which consumes some two-thirds of global sea-born iron ore, will release official trade figures for last month on Oct 8.
