China’s First Domestically Built Cruise Ship Delivered

The first large cruise ship ever to be built in China has been delivered, potentially leading the way for a new market player to rise within the global cruise shipbuilding industry.The 5,246-passenger Adora Magic City, built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s (CSSC) Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) based on Fincantieri' Vista-class design, will commence its maiden voyage from Shanghai in January 2024, operated by Asian cruise line Adora Cruises.The Chinese-built ship will service the domestic market with four-to-five day sailings…

Floating Wind Power Gains Traction But Can It Set Sail?

After a bumper year for floating offshore wind farm tenders, the nascent industry is poised for explosive growth in the coming decade as countries strive to cut their carbon emissions. But it's unlikely to be all plain sailing. Rising costs and supply chain bottlenecks have hit some projects and without investment in infrastructure to launch the vast turbines and tow them to sea, hopes of harnessing the full power of the ocean's winds to hit climate targets could be dashed, industry experts say.

Halter Marine Gearing Up for Icebreaker Build with New Plasma Cutter

Halter Marine unveiled its new PythonX plasma cutter as the Pascagoula, Miss. shipbuilder adds new equipment to gear up for construction of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Polar Security Cutter (PSC).The newly acquired Lincoln Electric PythonX will allow for steel parts to be cut via computerized numeric control (CNC) driven by the yard's 3D production design models, taking the place of the traditional hand-cut method. Thyssenkrupp Wins 3D Printing Approval

The international accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL has awarded thyssenkrupp, German multinational conglomerate, first additive manufacturing  approval of manufacturer certificateThe shipping industry is looking to take advantage of additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, to print spare parts, thereby reducing lead times, costs, stock requirements, and environmental impacts. Certification ensures that AM part users can have the same confidence in an additive manufactured product as a conventionally produced one.The newly issued certificate makes the thyssenkrupp TechCenter Additive Manufacturing the world’s first producer of 3D printed parts for maritime applications to obtain manufacturer approval from DNV GL.

Damen Delivers CSD500-S to ERA

Dutch shipbuilding conglomerate Damen Group announced that Damen Dredging Equipment has delivered CSD500-S, a fully customised cutter dredger for acidic environment,  to Australian customer, Energy Resources of Australia (ERA)."The Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD), which has been named the Brolga I, will work in an acidic environment with a pH of approximately 3 for which a wide array of adaptations have been incorporated," it said in a press release.The dredger has been shipped to Antwerp, where it was loaded on board a transport vessel bound for the north of Australia. It will arrive at the Ranger Mine in Jabiru in the Northern Territory at the end of May.The CSD500-S is based on the Damen standard vessel type…

Bangladesh Shipbreaking Yard Explosion Kills Two

Two yard workers have died and five others were severely injured yesterday (May 15) in a major explosion on board beached vessel at a shipbreaking yard in Chittagong, Bangladesh, said the NGO Shipbreaking Platform.At around 8:30 AM, a fire broke out on board the vessel BUNGA KELANA 4, beached at Mahinur Ship Breaking yard, also known as Premium Trade Corporation. The flames spread from abandoned waste oil located close to the engine room where workers were torch-cutting steel parts. Mohammod Rubel, 25 years old cutter man, lost his life in the accident. He died on his way to the hospital. Hamidul Islam’s dead body was found on the ship several hours after the explosion.

RCI Cuts Steel on Fifth Oasis Class Ship

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) has celebrated the start of construction of its fifth Oasis class ship at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France."The first steel plate of a new Oasis-Class ship (hull 34)  has been cut today at Chantiers de l’Atlantique machining workshop. Robert Alan Designed ATB Tugs for ITB Marine

The ITB Marine Group Ltd. (ITB) is currently well into construction of the first of two, twin Z-drive, ATB pusher tugs for service on the West Coast of North America. The tugs are being built at their Annacis Island Shipyard near Vancouver. The tugs will be connected by an articulating pin system to the existing double-hulled oil barges ITB Reliant and ITB Resolution which will receive retrofitted pin ladders and stern extensions for connecting to the new tugs. ITB had a well-defined statement of requirements for the tugs and a relatively clear vision of the desired layout. Accordingly, the general arrangement for the tug was developed in close collaboration with ITB Marine Group’s Chairman of the Board Captain Bob Shields.

Next Generation of RAmparts Tugs for SAAM

Chilean maritime services and logistics company SAAM S.A. has signed a contract with naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. for a new generation of RAmparts 2400-W Class tugs. The first two boats for SAAM’s Peruvian affiliate TRAMARSA, named Chincha and Tupac, are now under construction at Wuxi Shipyard in China with others soon to follow. The RAmparts 2400-W Class tugboat is a twin Z-drive, diesel-powered tug, designed for ship-assist and terminal support operations. Ship-handling is performed over the bow using a split drum hawser winch.

DMC’s Second Metal Spinning Machine into Service

The metal spinning machine, a propeller nozzle manufacturing method with basically one single weld only is now operational in the Chinese plant of Damen Marine Components (DMC). Consequently, the technique which DMC has revolutionized nozzle production is up and running at both of its plants. “The nozzles can be manufactured somewhat lighter and have a smoother inside. Traditional propeller nozzle manufacturing requires a minimum ten up to thirty or more welds at the inside of the nozzle, depending on size.

AVEVA Enhances Pipe and Steel Outfitting Fabrication

AVEVA announced that it has further strengthened its AVEVA Marine software portfolio with efficiency enhancements to better manage production information. New and improved features have been added to AVEVA Outfitting to better control pipe and steel outfitting fabrication. These features will enable shipbuilders and offshore engineers to benefit from tools to manage the entire production process from design to workshop, resulting in a more production efficient design and increased accuracy of production information, AVEVA said.

Korea's DSME & China's Rilin Forge Strategic Agreement

Rilin Group & Daewoo Shiipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to develop Dandong, China, shipbuilding base. Under the agreement, the two groups will jointly invest in and develop the Dandong Shipbuilding Industry Co in order to establish a shipbuilding industrial base in Dandong incorporating the fields of shipbuilding & repair, steel parts manufacturing and offshore engineering equipment. Headquartered in Dandong, Liaoning province, Rilin Group is a large-scale private enterprise with a business scope including infrastructure construction, port operation and resource exploitation. It took over Dandong Port in 2005, and has since made Dandong Port the only private controlled major port in China.

The demand on naval and commercial fleet assets has never been greater than it is today. Owners and operators are looking to reduce their current year capital expenditures as much as possible, which in turn is pushing the currently operating vessels into longer than planned service lives. This industry trend is driving a greater number of complex repairs, overhauls and large service life extension programs. Future Naval Force May Use the Strength of Titanium

ARLINGTON, Va. - Steel may have met its match: An Office of Naval Research (ONR)-funded project will produce a full-size ship hull section made entirely with marine-grade titanium, using a welding innovation which could help bring titanium into future Navy ship construction, officials announced. The contractor team building this section recently completed the industry's longest friction-stir titanium alloy welds and aims to complete the ship hull section this summer. The Gulf region is fast turning into a major hub for ship repair services and conversion projects, with Dubai Drydocks in the UAE and the Arab Ship Repair Yard (ASRY) in have been experiencing a significant increase in business volumes, AME reported. There are several reasons for the growing interest of ship owners and management companies in GCC-based ship repair yards, the most important being the cost factor. It is but obvious that ship owners will always seek the best deal possible when negotiating repair operations. Labor and steel parts are the most important components of any basic repair operation, and therefore hold the key to competitive pricing.

Bush Administration Deems Jones Act ‘Essential’

In its first public statement on the Jones Act, the Bush Administration has declared the law must be maintained as “an essential element of U.S. maritime policy that provides important economic and national security benefits to the nation, such as support of the U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta made the statement in response to a written question following his confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee. The Jones Act requires that cargo moving between U.S. ports be carried in vessels that are U.S.-owned, -built and -crewed. Similar U.S. cabotage laws reserve the movement of passengers and the performance of marine services such as dredging, towing and salvage to U.S.-owned, -built and -crewed vessels.

Robert Allan: Naval Architecture is in the Blood

Since the beginning of the 20th Century when Robert Allan's grandfather emigrated from Scotland to Canada, he treated the concept of naval architecture as a "science" rather than a trade. With little money but a lot of talent, the young man nurtured and grew a family business that would span three generations. From the time he accepted his first job as manager of a Canadian shipyard in 1919, Robert Allan started moving ideas from his head to innovative vessels.
