Russia's NLMK Could Close U.S. Business Due to Tariffs

Russian steelmaker NLMK has told the U.S. Department of Commerce that it could be forced to shut down its U.S. business due to the impact of new U.S. tariffs."Without an exclusion for semi-finished steel slabs, the tariffs will have the perverse effect of killing U.S. steelmaking jobs and potentially putting our company out of business," NLMK USA's Chief Executive Robert Miller wrote in a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce dated March 23, 2018.Reporting by Polina Ivanova and Anastasia Lyrchikova; Writing by Polina Ivanova

St. Lawrence Seaway Shipments Steady in September

“Notable increases were reflected in the export of wheat, corn and soybeans from the U.S. Ports of Duluth, Milwaukee and Toledo during the month of September,” said Betty Sutton, Administrator of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. “The good news is that we anticipate that trend to continue for the remaining three months of the 2016 navigation season.”  Also notable were shipments of aluminum and project cargo consisting of crane components, machinery, and transformers.

“We are about half-way through the 2016 navigation season and our overall cargo tonnage numbers are down by 11 percent,” said Betty Sutton, Administrator of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. Sutton added, “Aluminum shipments supporting the automotive industry played a significant role in activity at the ports of Oswego, NY, Toledo, OH and Detroit, MI. We also saw wind energy parts moving through the Port of Ogdensburg, NY, headed for the new Jericho Rise Wind Farm project in upstate New York.

Kalmar's Super Gloria Reachstacker for Egon Evertz

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order from Egon Evertz KG for Super Gloria, the world's biggest reachstacker. The machine will be operated at Salzgitter Flachstahl for handling hot and cold steel slabs. The design and build project was completed by Kalmar in 12 months. The Evertz Group, a company based in Solingen, Germany has specialised in serving steel mills all over the world with products and as service provider for over 50 years. Through the constant improvement of techniques, procedures and parts for steel production, it has become the leading name in the industry. Kalmar's solution was devised to meet Egon Evertz's increasing requirement to handle heavier loads.

St. Lawrence Seaway Cargo Shipments Return

Over 15 million metric tons of cargo moved through the St. Lawrence Seaway during the month of July, down just 4 percent over last year, marking a sustained comeback after the slow start to the shipping season. "The month of July was extremely busy for our ports on the Great Lakes-Seaway System as they handled high value cargoes like steel, wind components, and machinery that arrived from 13 different countries," said Rebecca Spruill, Director of Trade Development for the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

China Navigation Orders Geared Bulk Carriers

China Navigation Company orders four 39,500 dwt Deltamarin designed B.Delta37 handysize bulkcarriers from Chengxi Shipyard in China. Following an initial order placed in March this year, CNCo has now contracted a total of 8 B.Delta37 vessels scheduled for delivery between August 2013 and December 2014. CNCo and Chengxi have also agreed to an additional 8 options to be declared in 2013. This order represents a significant commitment by the Company in the energy efficient B.Delta37 design which offers lower fuel consumption, additional cargo deadweight and greater cargo cubic capacity compared to the best existing designs. The vessels will be deployed in CNCo’s drybulk division, Swire Bulk, and will operate on a worldwide basis.

Cargo Shipments Through Seaway Up

North American commodities for the industrial and manufacturing sectors drove an uptick in tonnage numbers along the Great Lakes-Seaway System. The St. Lawrence Seaway reported a 9.8 percent increase for total cargo shipments in October – 4.4 million metric tons – compared to October 2011. Tonnage Numbers Steady at U.S. Ports

U.S. ports continued to post positive tonnage numbers in October. The Seaway’s year-to-date total cargo shipments from March 22 to October 31 were 29 million metric tons, up 2 percent from the same period last year. “With just two months left in the 2011 navigation season, the Seaway is on track to meet its projected seven percent improvement over last year’s tonnage performance,” says Rebecca Spruill, Director of Trade Development for the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

22 Seaports to Receive AAPA Awards

The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), a trade group representing port authorities throughout the Western Hemisphere, has selected 22 seaports to be recognized for exemplary projects, programs and initiatives at its annual awards event later this summer. The awards, for achievements in facilities engineering, environmental improvement, information technology and communications, will be presented to winning ports at a Sept. 14 luncheon in conjunction with AAPA's 100th Annual Convention in Seattle (https://www.aapa2011.org/main.aspx), which runs Sept. 11-15. * the Port of Long Beach, winner of the 2011 Dan Maynard Communications Award for Overall Excellence, which is bestowed on the port earning the most award points in AAPA's Communications Awards Program competition.

Year-to-Date Seaway Cargo Shipments Up 18%

Cargo shipments through the St. Lawrence Seaway continue to rebound on the back of strong American grain exports and iron ore and steel activity, along with an uptick of new business and trade routes. The St. Lawrence Seaway reported that total year-to-date shipments reached 22.9 million metric tons from March 25 to September 30, an increase of 18 percent over the same period in 2009. Year-to-date shipments of iron ore for 2010 is up 62 percent to 7.2 million metric tons compared to last year, while American grain shipments have increased by 36 percent to 1.3 million metric tons. In September, these numbers were boosted by a 68 percent surge in American grain shipments to 604,000 metric tons compared to the same month in 2009.

Seaway Cargo Shipments Up 17% First Half of Season

Cargo shipments through the St. Lawrence Seaway continue to be buoyed by demand for iron ore and steel slabs with an overall increase of 16.6% year-to-date compared to the same period last year. The St. Lawrence Seaway reported that marine vessels carried 14.8 million tonnes of cargo from March 25 to July 31 — an increase of over 2 million tonnes compared to the 12.7 million tonnes handled during the same period last year. Total shipments during the month of July were down 4.8% compared to the same period in 2009 due to lower coal and grain traffic. However, iron ore continued to perform strongly during the month with a 30% increase to 892,000 tonnes. Imports of steel slabs, in the category of break bulk, rebounded to 45,000 tonnes.
