Final Containership Leaves Stockholm's Frihamnen Port

First Containership Arrives at Sweden's Newest Port

Unifeeder containership SCA Tunadal on Wednesday claimed the maiden call at Sweden’s newest freight port, Stockholm Norvik Port, following the completion of a long port construction project.The container terminal is now open, both for vessel calls and for shore-based business operations at the port. The 32 hectare container terminal is run by Hutchison Ports, one of the world’s largest container terminal operators, with 52 ports in 27 countries.Nine goods in 10 arrive in Sweden by sea, and the Stockholm region accounts for half of Sweden’s entire consumption.

Best Year for Stockholm Port

Swedish Ports of Stockholm summarized 2018 as a record revenue year, with stable freight volumes and a record number of cruise passengers.Sweden’s biggest passenger port saw more than 16 million passengers travelling by ferry, cruise ship or on archipelago services in 2018.“2018 was our best year, both financially and in terms of volumes. Volumes Up at Ports of Stockholm

All Ports of Stockholm freight segments increased during the first three quarters of the year in comparison to the same period of 2016. More and more goods are being transported by sea, directly to the growing Stockholm region. Over the first nine months of 2017 freight volumes increased substantially at Ports of Stockholm. This rise can be seen across all segments; ferry freight, containers and bulk cargo. “Freight volumes have increased considerably at all Ports of Stockholm ports. The trend is obvious. The economy is flourishing and Stockholm is growing,” says Johan Castwall, Ports of Stockholm Managing Director. Ports of Stockholm is Sweden’s third largest ferry freight port and it is freight cargo on ferries that has increased most in terms of numbers of tonnes.

Ports of Stockholm Container Volume Zoom

A new record has been set for the number of containers transported to the Container Terminal at Frihamnen. Never before have so many containers been transported by sea directly to the strongest growing capital city region in Europe and Sweden's largest consumer market. At the beginning of December 2016 Ports of Stockholm exceeded the previous record set at Frihamnen of just over 51 000 containers*. Construction of Stockholm Norvik Port Begins

The start of construction of the Stockholm Norvik Port and Norvik Logistics and Business Park was celebrated on 16th September. The ceremony was a well-attended and festive event for both commerce and the general public. Stockholm is one of Europe’s most rapidly growing capital cities and freight volumes are constantly increasing. To facilitate the sustainable and efficient supply of goods to the region Ports of Stockholm is building a new port for rolling goods and container traffic at Norvik, close to Nynäshamn. NCC will construct the Norvik Logistics and Business Park adjacent to the port, where companies will be able to establish their operations in a dynamic environment, in close proximity to the port, road network, railways and capital city.

Construction of new Stockholm Norvik Port Begins

For Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), one of the world’s leading container terminal operators, Stockholm is strategically important. In April the final permit was obtained to begin construction of the new Stockholm Norvik Port. Ports of Stockholm will build and own the container terminal, while HPH will operate the terminal. Today HPH already operates the Container Terminal at Frihamnen, Stockholm. “We believe in the importance of Stockholm and the whole Baltic Sea area. After our already good cooperation at the existing container terminal, we are now intensifying our work with Ports of Stockholm. The Stockholm Norvik Port offers improved conditions to optimally serve the Stockholm region.

Stockholm Norvik Port Construction to Start

The planned freight port, the Stockholm Norvik Port, just north of Nynäshamn, is extremely important for the establishment of an efficient, eco-friendly supply of goods to the Stockholm region. In accordance with the Swedish Environmental Code, construction and operation of the port requires a legal ruling. Today the Swedish Supreme Court issued a positive ruling by deciding not to allow permission for an appeal to be heard. This means that construction of the port can begin during the year. “We are very pleased about the Supreme Court’s decision. After a long process in this important project for the Stockholm region, the Supreme Court has issued its final ruling and we can at last begin to build the Stockholm Norvik Port,” says Johan Castwall, Ports of Stockholm Managing Director.
