European Banks Back Green Shipping Deal
The European Investment Bank and Dutch bank ABN Amro will sign an agreement to support investments for greening the European shipping fleet. This framework is the first with a financial institution in the Netherlands and is supported by the Connecting Europe Facility and was made possible by the EFSI (European Fund for Strategic Investments), central pillar of the Juncker Commission’s Investment Plan for Europe. The framework guarantee agreement will ensure that promoters of sustainable projects in the maritime transport sector can benefit from favorable financial terms as a result of the EIB's AAA rating. Innovation for Sustainable Transport
A UN conference has highlighted the importance of technology and innovation in ensuring sustainable transport for all. International Maritime Organization (IMO) was present at the UN’s first ever Global Sustainable Transport Conference, held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan (26-27 November). Concluding the two-day conference with the so-called ‘Ashgabat Statement’, participants stressed the need to promote the integration of science, technology and innovation into sustainable transport systems by tapping into technological opportunities in the decades to come, in order to bring about fundamental, transformative changes to transport systems.
Maersk CEO Appointed to UN Advisory
Morten Engelstoft, CEO of Services and Other Shipping, said CO2 issues will be on his agenda as a newly appointed member of a UN High-level Advisory Group for Sustainable Transport. The cause to champion CO2 reduction in shipping has been given a boost from a Maersk Group perspective. Morten Engelstoft, CEO of Services and Other Shipping, has recently been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as a member of a High-Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport.
