Singapore has once again emerged in top place in a ranking Menon’s Leading Maritime Capitals of the World Report (Menon Report) for 2017. The study, by Norwegian consultancy firm Menon Economics, looked at 24 objective indicators and garnered survey responses from more than 250 industry experts across all continents. Singapore was also ranked first in the report's 2015 and 2012 surveys. Singapore was ranked number one in the following three categories: Shipping, Ports and Logistics, and Attractiveness and Competitiveness. The maritime nation also scored impressive results in the remaining two categories: second place in Maritime Technology and fourth place in Finance And Law.

SeaThigor, the forward propeller shaft seal Thordon Bearings introduced to the market last year, has been nominated in the technology category of the Green4Sea awards, which will take place in Athens this April. Officially unveiled at Hamburg’s SMM exhibition, last September, the SeaThigor forward seal has been cited as “raising the bar in dynamic and static seal design”. It incorporates an ingenious secondary seal module to provide Safe-Return-To-Port capability in the event of a face failure of the primary seal. A pneumatically activated inflatable element prevents water ingress along the shaft, allowing for the repair of the main seal whilst at sea, or for the shaft to turn at a lower speed so the vessel can safely return to port for primary seal repair or replacement.

Thordon Bearings has developed a bespoke modeling tool capable of calculating the amount of operational oil prevented from leaking into the world’s oceans with each installation of a seawater-lubricated propeller shaft bearing. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) presented an Innovation Award to Volvo Penta for its new Forward Drive (FWD) propulsion system in the Alternate Drive Technology category at the 2015 Miami International Boat Show today. Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) employee is honored  with a YWCA Women of Distinction Award. Stephanie Simmons, director of Navy Program Operations, was recognized in the science and technology category at a ceremony at Christopher Newport University. Popular Science magazine has announced that the Hardsuit 2000 has been chosen to receive a 2001 “Best of What’s New” award in the General Technology category. Each year, the editors of Popular Science select 100 products for the "Best of What's New" from the annual review of thousands of new products, technology developments and scientific achievements. Grand awards are presented to the top product in each of 10 categories named by the publication.
