Raymarine’s New InstAlertTM technology Update

InstAlertTM, the new safety enhancing software upgrade for Raymarine’s TH Series handheld thermal cameras, automatically highlights in red the ‘hottest’ objects visible. Using the new InstAlert mode means that a person in the water now stands out in bright red against a black and white background; a quick and easy spot in an emergency situation. Available as software upgrade file 03.13.00.dfu, the new InstAlertTM detection palette can be added to the feature profile of both new and existing TH Series products and offers four pre-set levels to optimize the image contrast for maximum target definition. Making pictures from heat, not light, the rugged and affordable TH series cameras show objects, even ice, through the thermal energy they emit.

FLIR Systems, introduces the MU-Series, a thermal night vision system. The multi-sensor payload comes with a cooled midwave infrared, high-resolution 640 x 512 thermal camera and a high-resolution color camera.Other options include a low-light black and white camera to help with low-light situational awareness and a wide field of view uncooled longwave infrared, high-resolution 640 x 480 thermal camera to maximize MU-Series’ spectral range. MU-Series’ midwave infrared camera cuts through particulates in the atmosphere to provide crisp thermal video, even at long range and in foul weather.

The T200 detects floating objects, navigation aids, other vessels, and even people in the water using FLIR thermal imaging technology and now even small boats can see at night with the fixed mount thermal night vision cameras. Engineered for smaller vessels, the T200 Series is both compact and lightweight. The T200’s dimensions (7” high and 5.9” in diameter) make it best suited for smaller vessels where larger thermal camera models were previously considered impractical. The small footprint allows the T200 Series to be mounted on any cabin roof, radar arch or mast.

Piracy and Armed Response on Ships

Merchant vessel Al Marjan was released from pirates off the Somali coast Dec. 2. Al Marjan had been under the control of Somalia-based pirates since Oct. 17. The U.S. Navy dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) was on hand to assist the vessel and its crew following its release. The U.S. Navy has maintained a ship presence off the coast of Somalia since late October, where there have been six pirated vessels off the Somali coast in the last 30 days. The U.S.-led multinational maritime tas

Modern day piracy, it seems, is rather like plugging a badly leaking pipe with one finger — just when you think you might have stemmed the flow from one area, another jet of water shoots out to hit you in the face. Even if some long-term solution is reached on this front, a more sinister and sustained outbreak of piracy (and militancy) has once again arisen in Nigeria. Increased threats to the oil industry (including on ship and offshore rig personnel) from well organized and armed militant groups in the Niger Delta have become more and more prevalent…
