Solstad Offshore ASA, Rolls Royce Marine, Norled AS and Maersk Line have been shortlisted for the prestigious Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award 2014. The prize recognizes candidates from the shipping industry that have made an outstanding contribution to the environment. The award is presented to the winner by H.M. King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Annual Conference on March 31. The Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award was established in 1999 by Thor Heyerdahl (1914 – 2002) and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.

The semiannual Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award was launched in 1999 by Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association to recognizes candidates from the shipping industry that have made an outstanding contribution for the environment. To qualify for the award, candidates must have demonstrated exceptional technical innovation and environmental work in correspondence with Thor Heyerdahl’s spirit for the conservation of the marine environment. Emphasis will be placed on measures that combine environmental benefits with improved profitability. Individuals from academia, science, research institutes, governments, NGOs, media and the shipping industry are encouraged to nominate.

The world’s largest message-in-a-bottle will be released shortly, 200 nautical miles off the coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands. The bottle constructed by the owner of Norwegian company Koeningsegg is registered as a boat, and will be tweeting photos live via satellite as it drifts in the Atlantic Ocean, having been christened by well- known explorer Jarle Andhøy with beauty queen 'Miss Tenerife'. Inside the bottle is a quantity of bottles of the company's soft-drink product 'Solo' as well as a fitting 12 square meter letter to the finder.

The Japanese shipping company, NYK Line, was today announced as winner of the Heyerdahl Award 2005. The Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Børge Brende, presented the Award during an Award Ceremony in Tokyo. The Heyerdahl Award honours the spirit of the Norwegian explorer Dr. Thor Heyerdahl and inspire the world maritime community to innovative actions to protect the environment. - NYK Line demonstrates a remarkable commitment to ceaselessly improving its environmental performance. The committee for the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award has nominated shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the Norwegian-headed industry and research project FellowSHIP Project and the ProSea Foundation in Holland for this year’s Heyerdahl Award. The committee has now submitted the list of nominees to an award committee, which will choose this year’s winner. The award will be presented by His Majesty King Harald at the opening of Nor-Shipping in Lillestrøm on 12 June. Spanish explorer Kitin Munoz set sail on Sunday from Barcelona in a primitive reed boat to try to prove that ancient seafarers could have crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Munoz, 43, and his multinational seven-man crew hope to reach Colombia's Caribbean coast on the 20-m (65-foot) Mata Rangi III. He made two attempts to cross the Pacific Ocean during the late 1990s, but both ended in disaster. "We have constructed a boat identical to the boats used by ancient navigators, without any modern materials such as plastics," he said. The boat was built in the Olympic port of Barcelona from reeds specially imported from Lake Titicaca on the Peru-Bolivia border.

The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF) last night was awarded the prestigious Thor Heyerdahl International Environmental Award, presented by the Norwegian Shipowners Association. Accepting on behalf of ITOPF was Dr. Ian White, the group’ Managing Director and a marine biologist who has been with the organization since 1977. ITOPF has, since being established in 1968 in the wake of the Torrey Canyon accident, taken an advisory role in the event of oil spills around the globe, sharing lessons learned from past spills and providing detailed information regarding the characteristics of certain products once they enter the sea environment.

The Expert Committee today announced the Short List for the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award which will be presented on June 3 in Oslo, Norway, at the Nor-Shipping. The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF) is nominated for its world leading role in maritime environmental knowledge management and knowledge sharing. OptiMarin AS is nominated for their pioneering development of cost efficient ballast water treatment plants for shipboard installation. Norwegian shipowner company Eidesvik AS has developed the first offshore supply vessel to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). By introducing LNG as an alternative to marine diesel, the result will be an 85 percent reduction in the outlet of NOx, 20 percent CO2 and 100 percent SOx.
