Totem Ocean Trailer Express Names Tacoma Terminal

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. Names Tacoma Terminal In Memory of Legendary Leader. Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc.’s (TOTE) Tacoma Terminal has been named the Robert P. Magee Marine Terminal in memory of and tribute to TOTE’s legendary leader. The new name is proudly displayed on signs at each gated entrance to the terminal, as well as in front of the administration building. A formal dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the TOTE Terminal at the Port of Tacoma. Bob Magee began working for TOTE in May 1986 as Vice President of Marine Operations.

TOTE Shifts Maritime Companies under Unified Brand

U.S. Jones Act carrier TOTE announced it has shifted operating companies Totem Ocean Trailer Express and Sea Star Line, respectively serving the Alaskan and Puerto Rican/Caribbean markets. Going forward, the companies will be known collectively as TOTE Maritime. Sea Star Line has delivered goods to Puerto Rico for more than 30 years with twice weekly reliable service that is responsible for goods traveling from the U.S. to the island, while Totem Ocean Trailer Express provides twice weekly service to Alaska and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

ECA Compliance Waiver Granted to US Shipowner TOTE

EPA and USCG facilitate a move by Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) to convert its vessels to alternative fuels. Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) has received a permit providing a conditional waiver from the current Emissions Control Area (ECA) fuel sulfur content requirements of MARPOL Annex VI regulation 14.4 while the company pursues conversion of its vessels to alternative fuels. The permit was issued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) under authority provided in Regulation 3 of Annex VI.

Alstom Receives Order for Ship Sets

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), a subsidiary of General Dynamics, has selected Alstom to supply the complete power package for two ship sets for Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. For each ship set, Alstom will provide two 19.75 MW electric motor controllers, the switchgear, transformers and control system. The value of the contract is $24 million, and the first ship set is to be delivered to the shipyard early in 2001.

Work Resumes at Port of Tacoma for Alaska Cargo

Following negotiations with International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 23 and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), an agreement was reached allowing Tacoma longshore workers to load and discharge Alaska-bound domestic cargo ships. Approximately 70 percent of all commercial goods consumed in Alaska are shipped through Port of Tacoma terminals. The agreement allows Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) vessels to be discharged and loaded at the TOTE Terminal on the Blair Waterway. Also, CSX container ships will be discharged and loaded at the APM Terminal on the Sitcum Waterway.

TOTE Receives Environmental Safety Award

Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) was honored with the States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force Legacy Award 2000 this past July in recognition for its commitment to the environment and vessel safety by designing and building new cargo vessels with technologically driven oil spill prevention and marine safety features. More significantly, the two vessels are designed with double hulls, twin-engine rooms, twin propellers, twin rudders and an environmentally sophisticated sewage and ballast water system.

Midnight Sun

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) and Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE) christened M.V. Midnight Sun, the first commercial dry cargo vessel to be built in the U.S. in 10 years. The Midnight Sun is the first of two new Orca-class trailerships being built by NASSCO for TOTE's service from Tacoma, Wash., to Anchorage, Alaska. It and its sister ship, MV North Star, are 840 x 118-ft. (256 x 35.9-m), RoRo cargo ships offering the option to carry trailers as large as 53 ft. in length. The ships' cargo can be loaded and discharged in nine hours, with the speed and efficiency of this process being an important competitive advantage for TOTE.

TOTE, Inc.: The New look of American Shipping Group

On January 1, 2012 American Shipping Group underwent a dramatic transformation. The company, formerly known as ASG, became TOTE, Inc., and experienced a makeover in logo, look and structure. Seeing opportunity for market growth, TOTE, Inc. organized its five independently managed businesses in to three groups: Maritime, Logistics and Ship Management. For now, each company will retain their name, logo and independent branding. The strengths of the individual companies will be enhanced by marketing and sales efforts for the overall portfolio by all TOTE, Inc, affiliated companies.

Sea Star Line, TOTE Leadership Changes

Effective January 1, 2014, Sea Star Line (SSL) President Peter Keller will become Executive Vice President of Sea Star Line’s parent company, TOTE, Inc. In this new capacity he will assist in the oversight of both TOTE Shipholdings and the TOTE Maritime Division, which includes Sea Star Line and Totem Ocean Trailer Express (Totem Ocean). Keller joined TOTE in February of 2012 as President of Sea Star Line and has been leading the conversion of the company’s fleet to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Coalition for Responsible Transportation Honors TOTE

The Coalition for Responsible Transportation (CRT) today commended one of its members, Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE), for becoming the first container shipping line to announce that it is converting its ORCA class vessels to use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as their primary fuel source. ABS to Class US' First LNG Bunker Barge

ABS has been selected to class an LNG bunker barge under construction at Conrad Orange Shipyard, Inc, a division of Conrad Shipyard, LLC, for WesPac Midstream LLC and Clean Marine Energy LLC (CME), the classification society announced. The 2,200 cu m barge is scheduled for delivery in mid-2016 and will initially be deployed in Tacoma, Wash., to service shipowner Totem Ocean Trailer Express’s (Totem Ocean) Orca Class ro-ro vessels. The unit will then be relocated to Jacksonville, Fla., to serve parent company TOTE’s Marlin Class dual-fuel container vessels and other LNG-powered vessels in the Port of Jacksonville. Designed by Bristol Harbor Group Inc, the barge features a single tank equipped with the Mark III Flex cargo containment system supplied by GTT North America.

Totem Enters Into Agreement With NASSCO

Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) of Anchorage, Alaska, has come to an agreement with National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) for the construction of two RoRo vessels for its Alaska service. Measuring 839 ft. (255.7 m), the vessels are scheduled for delivery during late 2002. According to Robert P. "These ships, which carry more than 50 percent more cargo than our present ships, are designed specifically to endure the harsh conditions of the Alaska trade," Magee added. The new vessels will be the same size as TOTE's existing three ships, "while remaining extra capacity to fulfill any surge cargo needs and allow for seamless service during dry docks," Magee furthered.

TOTE Earns OHSAS Certification

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc., (TOTE), a shipping company operating roll-on/roll-off cargo vessels between the Ports of Tacoma, Wash., and Anchorage, Alaska, announced its completion in April of the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001:2007 certification process for safety standards. TOTE was certified to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 standard for environmental practices in 2007. The OHSAS 18001 implementation was done in coordination with 14001 as a health, safety and environmental (HSE) program. TOTE has retained an ISO certification for quality management systems (9000 series) since 1998. To achieve those targets, TOTE enacted numerous practices, including a safety orientation for all employees and new employees.

Westfalia Separator has received an order from NASSCO for fuel oil and lube oil separators to be implemented on a pair of ice strengthened, environmentally safe RoRo newbuilds for Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE). Designed to carry 600 feu and 200 vehicles at a service speed of 24 knots, the 840 ft. (256 m) vessels are scheduled for delivery in April and September 2002. The vessels' supply scope will consist of one plant for treating heavy oil and diesel oil, which includes a trio of separators, type OSC 50, one plant for treating the lube oil of the main engines that includes four separators, type OSC 30. One additional plant that will be used to treat the lube oil of the auxiliary engines includes two separators type OSC 5.

MARAD to Fund Study on LNG Conversions

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced it has entered a $900,000 cooperative agreement with Totem Ocean Trailer Express Inc. (TOTE) to study the costs and benefits of converting vessel to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion. Totem Inks LNG Conversion Deal with Keppel

Totem Ocean Trailer Express announced that it has signed a contract with Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, wholly owned subsidiary Keppel Shipyard Ltd for the conversion of  the  Midnight Sun to dual fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion. The U.S. continues to lead the push towards "LNG as Fuel" in the commercial shipping sector, as these 'historic' announcements are now becoming more routine. Totem Ocean Trailer Express (Totem Ocean) announced that Wärtsilä will supply main engines, generators and integrated LNG storage and fuel gas handling systems (LNGPac(TM)) for the largest LNG conversions ever undertaken in North America. Carlile Transportation Joins Saltchuk Companies

Carlile Transportation Systems, one of the largest trucking and logistics companies in Alaska, has been acquired by Saltchuk Resources, a Seattle-based family of diversified transportation and petroleum distribution companies. “Our relationship with Saltchuk is 20 years long, already having been friends, vendors and customers," said Harry McDonald, Carlile CEO and cofounder. Carlile will remain a standalone company headquartered in Anchorage. “As with all of the Saltchuk companies, we will reinvest in Carlile’s assets, pursue growth opportunities and build on the very strong foundation the McDonald family has built for the future,” said Mark Tabbutt, of Saltchuk.
