The technology group Wärtsilä has successfully completed the installation and operational staff training for its Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) solution in the ports of Lisbon and Setúbal / Sesimbra in Portugal.The systems will increase the efficiency of these ports by reducing waiting time for vessels and allowing just-in-time pilotage. BAE Systems announced it has delivered its 150th OE-120 Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) antenna to the U.S. Navy. The antenna is used by sailors to identify friendly aircraft and vessels, and supports shipboard air traffic management systems for both IFF and secondary surveillance radars. It is currently on about 150 U.S. and allied ships worldwide, from frigates to aircraft carriers.Originally designed to support the Aegis Combat System, the OE-120 antenna is the only electronically scanned IFF antenna used by the U.S. Navy.

Speaking during Baltic Transport Week in Gdansk this week Andrew Huxley, Development Director at freight transport insurance specialist TT Club, warned port and terminal operators to be aware of the reputational damage that can be a serious consequence of uninsured incidents resulting from avoidable risks. It is estimated that for every unit cost incurred in insurance claims it can cost between eight and thirty-six times that amount in direct and indirect uninsured losses for the business involved*.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced Friday that 72 projects will receive a total of $600 million from the sixth round of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. Of these, 12 Coalition for America’s Gateway and Trade Corridor (CAGTC) member projects were awarded a total of $135 million for projects with full costs exceeding $490 million. One in three grant dollars, just over $198 million, was awarded to 25 projects supporting freight movement. Compared to previous rounds, this represents a decrease in the amount of money and total awards given to freight relative to other types of projects.

In addition, Transas will upgrade the current VTS system in the Semarang port with a fully redundant AIS Base Station T214. The new VTS systems will be based on Transas flexible and accurate Navi-Monitor solution developed for monitoring and surveillance purposes.

Raven Aerostar say that the Associated Branch Pilots of the Port of New Orleans (Bar Pilots) has selected its Traffic Management System. The system provides increased situational intelligence for Port of New Orleans ship pilots. Raven Aerostar's marine navigation aid systems are used by ship pilots in over a dozen ports in the U.S. The Bar Pilots recently ordered 35 Raven Traffic Management Systems, including the company's latest rate of turn sensor, Revolve. Revolve is a marine navigation aid developed by Raven Aerostar to enhance safety by enabling local ship pilots to better predict the future position of vessels as they maneuver waterways and ship traffic safely to dock. Yesterday, the European Commission launched three Calls for Proposals under the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) multi-annual program, making €180 million (nearly $258 million) available to finance European transport infrastructure projects in the fields of European Rail Traffic Management Systems (ERTMS), Motorways of the Sea (MoS) and River Information Services (RIS). This will help to make travel and transport by rail and water more safe and secure as well as more attractive compared to other transport modes. Commission Vice President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, said:  "The Commission is happy to play its part in making our transport system more competitive and sustainable. Saab Transponder Tech and International Communications and Navigation Limited (ICAN) have been awarded contracts by Lockheed Martin Overseas Corp. to provide Automatic Identification System (AIS) solutions for Greece and Turkey. Complying with all IMO performance standards, the software delivers vessel position and related information from ship to ship and from ship to shore. It is formatted to provide collision avoidance capability on the ship's bridge and to augment vessel traffic management systems. Ships will carry a transponder that broadcasts the ship's identity, position, speed, course and other information to all other AIS users within VHF Radio range.
