Verret Shipyard Building Another for Blessy
Ted Verret reports that his family’s Plaquamine Louisiana shipyard will be sea trialing the new Blessey Marine push boat M/V Capt. Lance Dragon next week with a scheduled February 1 delivery. The 76 x 30 x 10-ft. towboat will be powered by a pair of Cummins KTA38 M0 engines rated for 850 hp each at 1800 RPM for a total of 170 rpm. Marine gears are a pair of Reintjes WAF562 with 6:1 ratios. The busy yard already has the keel laid and bulwarks formed for a 116x32-foot towboat for the same customer. One of the assets of the Verret yard is its full service machine shop where the lathes are busy working on shafts for the yard’s own boats and for other customers that send shafts up to 32 feet by 12 inches for repair.
News:Verret Delivers Push Boat to Blessey
In mid-December, Blessey Marine of Harahan, La., took delivery of another new push boat from, the Verret Shipyard at Plaquamine, La., a few miles up river from New Orleans. A sister ship to the Jane Ann Blessey, delivered in February 2001, and the Belth Wilson, delivered in February 2002, the 2,000 hp Randy Martin is 86 x 30 x 10.6-ft. with an eight-ft. operating draft. Mitch Jones, who oversees new construction for Blessey, reports that this is the final boat in the recent build program of the rapidly growing fleet. The Randy Martin brings the company fleet to 32 tow boats and 80 barges. "That boat should be covered by the Home and Garden televison program," says Jones in reference to the superlative finish in the new boat's crew areas.
Blessey Marine: Rollin’ On The River
The demand for handy sized towboats to handle inland river tows continues to grow and one of the strongest contributors to that growth is Blessey Marine. Primarily handling petroleum-related products, the firm has grown rapidly to their present fleet size of over 60 towboats with more on order. Although they have vessels ranging from 700 to 4900 HP, the 2000 HP Class is proving popular. Two recent deliveries illustrate slightly different sizes and configuration of their 2000 HP towboats. The MV Steve Scalise was built at the Verret Shipyard in Plaquemine, Louisiana to a design by the shipyard.
Blessey Builds Second 3200 HP Towboat
Following on the success of the Dreama Klaiber, launched in late 1999, Blessey Marine’s latest boat is an evolution of that concept. While the Dreama dimensions are 95x30x12.6, the new boat will be 110 x 32 x 11.5-feet. This allows for the same power with a shallower draft. The new boat will also be powered by a pair of 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50 M2 engines, delivering a total of 3200 hp (2,388 kW) for continuous duty at 1800 RPM. the engines are equipped with Cummins’ optional CENTRY electronic engine control systems and drive through Reintjes WAF 772 marine gears with a reduction of 7:1 turning 88- x 68-inch four-blade stainless steel propellers on eight-inch diameter shafts. The vessel is equipped with four flanking and two steering rudders, as are all of Blessey's towboats.
McKinney Chooses Mitsubishi
For more than 40 years, McKinney Companies has served the Gulf petroleum and dry cargo industries from its headquarters on the Mississippi River and Intracoastal Waterway. The latest addition to the towing fleet is the shiny new Mac Andrew McKinney. To power the push boat, they turned to Laborde Products to supply an S12A2 Mitsubishi engine rated 940 hp at 1,940 rpm. "We wanted a Tier II diesel engine with hydraulic governor," said Andy McKinney, VP of operations. "We also preferred to avoid the hassle of complex computers and electronics, so we chose a low-maintenance all-mechanical model.
Iconic Engines: Cummins K38-M
Most Americans will recall an iconic automobile engine from their youth. It might be an early 1950s Ford V-8 flat head or a 1970s Dodge 426 Hemi. Over the decades other engines have been added to the list. In a similar fashion mariners have identified classic marine diesels. One such is the Cummins 38-liter 2300-cu. inch engine known over the years as the KTA38. Canadian fisherman John Lenic has been running one in his 1978-built steel purse seiner Ocean Marauder. Still running on the original engine he swears by it.
Harvey Gulf Inks Deal With Trinity Offshore
In a contract worth $110 million, Trinity to build two dual fuel LNG-powered PSV’s for Harvey Gulf. Wartsila to supply integrated system that includes the dual-fuel machinery. 7 October 2011: Harvey Gulf International Marine has signed a deal with Trinity Offshore which will eventually produce the first two dual fuel LNG-powered offshore vessels under U.S. flag. The deal, reportedly worth at least $110 million, calls for the delivery of the first vessel in November 2013 with the second hull to follow about 4 months later. The vessels will be built in Trinity’s Gulfport location.
TOWBOAT TECH: Tougher, Kinder and more Hospitable
The design challenge for towboats in the new Millennium is they are being called upon to do tougher jobs on the water but at the same time have be more environmentally friendly to the water on which they sail. Also, many of today's towboats are light years ahead of their predecessors of just a few years ago in crew amenities and berthing spaces. "Much of the new technology we are seeing on towboats is because of new IMO, EPA, OSHA and ABS regulations," said Terry Boffone, president of Progressive Barge Line, Westwego, La. Progressive's business is mid-streaming fueling, so careful delivery of the products they carry such as diesel fuel and gasoline from the tank barge to the ship is critical.

The United States Maritime Resource announced that its training partner, Harvey Gulf International Marine, recently launched the PSV Harvey Energy, the first LNG-fueled vessel to enter service in North America. In March, the PSV Harvey Energy began working on charter to Shell in the Gulf of Mexico shortly after the vessel’s first successful LNG bunkering operation. ABS to Class LNG Bunker Barge

Seacor Announces JV with Cosco Shipping Affiliates
Offshore services vessel operator SEACOR Marine Holdings Inc. said it has formed a jointly owned company with affiliates of the world’s largest ship owner, COSCO Shipping Group. The Marshall Islands company, SEACOSCO Offshore LLC, entered into contracts for the purchase of eight Rolls-Royce designed new construction platform supply vessels (PSV) from COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Guangdong) Co., Ltd. Six of the PSVs are of UT 771WP design (4,400 tons deadweight), and two are of UT 771CD design (3,800 tons deadweight).
New LNG Bunkering Safety Training Course
The Maritime Simulation Institute in Middletown, R.I., is developing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering safety training course, with the first session to begin in June for Harvey Gulf International Marine. The 45-hour bunkering course for Harvey’s LNG bunkering persons-in-charge (PIC) will be offered ahead of any U.S. Coast Guard regulations governing LNG bunkering. The first course likely will include Harvey Gulf master’s, mates and engineers. Courses will be offered at MSI facilities at Texas A&M outside Houston and at MFA, the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow, west of Boston.
Wärtsilä Integrated LNG Propulsion System for Harvey Gulf PSV
Wärtsilä contracted for a complete (LNG) package, including propulsion, auxiliaries & controls, for a new OSV designed by STX Marine. The ship has been ordered by Harvey Gulf International Marine as a part of the company’s ‘Going Green’ initiative. The vessel will operate in the Gulf of Mexico’s offshore oilfields. BAE Systems said it has received contracts from the U.S. Navy for the modernization of guided missile destroyers USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) and USS Howard (DDG 83), valued at $41.6 million and $47.8 million respectively. The Great Lakes Towing Company and Great Lakes Shipyard have announced plans to hire 100 employees before the end of January 2018 to support continued growth driven by client demand. The company said it is seeking candidates to fill a wide range of positions, including shipyard welders, shipfitters and more. “At The Towing Company, we’re looking for great people to join our team,” said Joe Starck, the company’s president. Battery Hybrid Patrol Boat under Development
PBES and NORIS Automation GmbH have partnered on the hybrid drive systems for Europe’s first battery hybrid patrol vessel. The 45m long vessel is being built at Baltic Workboats Shipyard in Estonia and will be delivered with 273kWh of PBES Power 65 battery modules. “PBES batteries provide hours of low speed propulsion with reduced sound and heat signature as well as greatly increased efficiency,” said Brent Perry, PBES Chief Executive Officer. “The vessel is first of many that we will be seeing in law enforcement.
Palumbo Buys Mondomarine
Italian yard Palumbo Group has acquired the former Mondomarine facility in Savona on an initial six-month lease, reports local media. "By leasing the business unit of the Savona shipyard, Palumbo Group will grant the restart of the shipyard's activities, along with the immediate reinstatement of nine employees." Palumbo Group explained in a statement. The deal saves 9 jobs from the Italian shipyard that went into liquidation towards the end of 2017, which put a total of 57 jobs at risk.
