FuelEU Regulations Leave DoC Holder with Fuel Liabilities Risk

Implementation of the FuelEU Maritime regulation from 2025 presents an accountability dilemma for shipping as it is currently the Document of Compliance (DoC) holder that will be held responsible for fuel selection and could therefore face penalties - contrary to the ‘polluter pays’ principle, according to OceanScore.Shipping companies must start preparing now for the regulation as they face an August 31 deadline to submit a monitoring plan to track the fuel type and consumption for each EU voyage for each vessel as required by FuelEU

Underwater Bow Thruster Reinstallation

A month after a Hydrex diver/technicians removed the bow thruster of a 300-meter container vessel a team once again mobilized to Italy. They reinstalled the overhauled unit underwater with the use of the company’s flexible mobdock technique.The available time window for the removal of the bow thruster in October was very short because of the tight schedule of the vessel’s charterer. The time required to perform the operation therefore needed to be brought back to the absolute minimum. For this reason the job was split in parts, performed in different ports.

Crowley Maritime Corporation christened the third of four new LNG-ready Jones Act product tankers at a May 5 ceremony at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal in New Orleans. The 600-foot-long, 50,000-dead-weight-ton (dwt), 330,000-barrel-capacity MT Louisiana is capable of carrying crude oil or refined petroleum products, as well as other chemical products for U.S. Coastwise trade. The new vessel joins Crowley sister ships, Ohio and Texas, to be the first tankers ever to receive the American Bureau of Shipping’s LNG-Ready Level 1 approval

Crowley to Christen 3rd LNG-ready Product Tanker

Crowley Maritime Corp. announced it will hold a christening ceremony Thursday, May 5 in New Orleans for the newly built Louisiana, the company’s third of four new Jones Act product tankers. The 600-foot-long, 50,000-dead-weight-ton (dwt), 330,000-barrel-capacity tanker will operate in the U.S. Gulf and is capable of carrying crude oil or refined petroleum products, as well as various other chemical products. Crowley has the option to convert the new tanker to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion in the future

Crowley christens second of four newly built, LNG-ready product tankers for use in U.S. Crowley Maritime Corp. has christened the second of four new Jones Act product tankers yesterday at the South Florida Petroleum Terminal (The Public Dock) in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The 50,000 dead-weight-ton (dwt), 330,000-barrel-capacity Texas joins sister ship Ohio, which was christened by Crowley in November, as the first ever tankers to receive the American Bureau of Shipping’s (ABS) LNG-Ready Level 1 approval

Shippers Take Measures to Limit OW Bunker Fallout

Shipping firms have paid millions of dollars into U.S. accounts to prevent their vessels from being detained due to non-payment of bills for fuel supplied by the bankrupt OW Bunker, indicating the impact from the collapse of the Danish firm was spreading. OW Bunker filed for bankruptcy in November after losing almost $300 million in alleged fraudulent trading in Singapore, leading to claims by distributors who sold shipping fuel on behalf of OW Bunker but had not been paid. Some 13 cases involving bunker bills totalling about $12 million have been filed at New York's southern district court, a maritime lawyer said. U.S. court documents seen by Reuters show 11 firms

Maersk Vessel Gets Royston Enginei System

The Maersk Logger, AHTV (Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel) has been fitted with a Royston Enginei system to monitor fuel consumption during all phases of its operation. The 90-meter ship was built in 2009 under the Clean Design Class Notation, and since the vessel’s charterer is also the fuel owner they wanted a system for the continuous monitoring of its bunker consumption. This has now been installed and in future the Enginei system will enable the ship’s environmental impact and fuel consumption to be monitored more closely by the crew and by technical staff ashore.

Singapore's Otto Marine Charters Out PSV 'Sea Frost'

Otto Marine Limited confirm the time charter contract of their Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) - 'Sea Frost', for approximately US$8.0 million. Under the contract, which has recently commenced, Sea Frost has been contracted to support the Atwood Eagle rig located off the coast of Australia for a period of 152 days. Otto Marine add that the client has the option of extending the contract for an additional two terms based on the same terms and conditions. Completed in 2013, this vessel is the latest addition to the Group’s fleet, held under subsidiary Go Marine Group Pty Ltd.

Huisman Successfully Delivers 600mt Pedestal Crane

On Tuesday 8 March 2011, Huisman, the Dutch-based specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, successfully completed the load testing of the new build 600mt Pedestal Crane onboard Wind Turbine Installation Vessel “MPI Resolution”. The load test was the final step before the crane was handed over to the clients Centrica Renewable Energy Ltd and MPI Offshore Limited. The crane was constructed, installed, commissioned and tested at the Huisman facility in Schiedam, The Netherlands with the final load test taking place at the Keppel Verolme yard in Rozenburg, The Netherlands.

West Asia Maritime Strikes Bareboat Charter Deal

According to reports, Chennai-based shipping company, West Asia Maritime Ltd. (WAM), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for taking a bulk carrier from Mitsui & Co. of Japan under bareboat charter for $33.527 million. Under the bareboat charter, a vessel charterer has complete possession and control of the ship, including the right to its crew. IHIMU of Japan will build the 56,120 dead weight tonnage (dwt) bulk carrier vessel. The new vessel, which is to be delivered in the first quarter of 2008, has been chartered for more than 12 years and six months and will be trading worldwide for the movement of dry bulk cargoes. Addition of Charterer to USCG Advance Notice of Arrival

The U.S. Coast Guard is amending its Advance Notice of Arrival regulation by adding charterer information as a required element. As of September 18, 2002, the vessel's Advance Notification of Arrival report must include the name of the vessel's charterer. For this purpose, charterer means the person or organization that contracts for the majority of the carrying capacity of the ship. The term includes time and voyage charterers. When scored according to their history, charterers that fit into the high-risk category will have their vessels targeted for boarding. Source: HK Law

USCG Requests Charterer Information on NOA Requests Reports
