Viking Grace Marks 1,000 LNG Bunkering Milestone
From the very beginning, the M/S Viking Grace – delivered in January 2013 – was an environmental milestone. The vessel attracted global attention as an environmental pioneer by being the first large passenger vessel to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Now, three and a half years later, one thousand bunkerings (fuellings) have been performed in partnership with the Swedish company AGA Gas AB. One thousand bunkerings via the M/S Seagas: The M/S Seagas, which was specially built for ship-to-ship refuelling, has performed its 1,000th LNG bunkering of the Viking Grace since that vessel was placed in service in January 2013. The Seagas supplies the Viking Grace with about 60 tonnes of LNG while the vessel is docked in the morning at Stadsgården in central Stockholm.
Wärtsilä Signs Five Year LNG Agreement
Wärtsilä signed a five year maintenance agreement with Finnish ship owner, Viking Line. The agreement, which became effective from March 1, is for maintaining and servicing the recently launched 'Viking Grace', the largest passenger ferry ever to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. STX Turku Shipyard Delivered a Cruise Ferry
On Thursday 10 January 2013, STX Finland Oy’s Turku shipyard delivered a next-generation cruise ferry to Viking Line ABP. Building of the environmentally friendly M/S Viking Grace started at the STX Turku shipyard in September 2011 and the ship was floated out in August 2012. The ship provided some 2,600 man-years of labour to the shipyard. M/S Viking Grace will enter traffic on the Turku (Finland) – Åland Islands – Stockholm (Sweden) route on 15 January 2013. M/S Viking Grace is the most environmentally friendly large cruise vessel ever built, using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel. The ship’s emissions into the sea have been eliminated, and emissions into the air are remarkably lower than those of any other large passenger ships.
AGA to Supply LNG for Viking Line Ferry
Viking Line Abp has signed an agreement with AGA Gas AB on supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) for Viking Line’s new passenger ferry. Viking Line’s newbuilding “NB 1376”, recently named the M/S Viking Grace, will provide service on the Stockholm (Sweden) – Åland Islands (Finland) – Turku (Finland) route beginning in January 2013. The vessel, currently under construction at the STX Europe shipyard in Turku, will be Viking Line’s largest passenger ferry and will be powered by LNG.
ABB to Supply for New Viking Line Ferry
ABB won an order to provide an energy management system for one a new Viking Line cruise ferry, being built at STX Turku in Finland and due for delivery in 2013. The new ship measures 214m long and has a top speed of 22 knots, able to carry 2,800 passengers o the route connecting Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden. The ship will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its fuel, which will be a first for a passenger vessel of this size. Wärtsilä Receives Order For Gas Engines and Equipment to Viking Line's New Environmentally Sound Passenger Ferry
Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions provider, has been awarded a contract by shipbuilding company STX Finland Oy to supply the propulsion machinery for a new passenger ferry to be built for Viking Line, a Finnish ship owner. The vessel will be the largest passenger ferry to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG), making it the most environmentally sound and energy efficient large passenger vessel in the industry to date. The ship will be built at the STX Turku shipyard, in Finland, and is scheduled to enter service in 2013.
STX Finland, Viking Line Sign $315m Deal

The signed agreement represents approximately 2600 man-years employment. The new cruise ferry will be the most environmentally friendly big passenger vessel to date. Production of New Concept Ferry Begins at Aker

Wärtsilä Engines to Power Viking Line Ferry
The new high-speed RoPax ferry by Viking Line will be equipped with Wärtsilä main engines and generating sets. Wärtsilä Corporation was awarded a contract in March 2006 to deliver the power plant for the new ferry contracted by the Mariehamn, Finland, based shipping company Viking Line Abp at the Helsinki shipyard of Aker Yards. The ferry will be delivered in January 2008. For this ferry, Wärtsilä will deliver four eight-cylinder Wärtsilä 46F main engines, each of 10,000 kW output at 600 rpm, and three 8-cylinder in-line Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 generating sets, each of 1350 kWe output. The 2500-passenger ferry will have dimensions of 185 m length overall, 170 m length between perpendiculars, 27.70 m breadth and 6.55 m design draught.
Aker Yards and Viking Sign LOI
The LOI for a fast passenger/car ferry signed on November 21 by Aker Yards and Viking Line Abp was today confirmed as a firm contract worth approximately 120-130 million euro. The contract includes options for two similar vessels. The vessel intended for the Helsinki-Tallinn route will be 185 m long and 27.7 m wide, taking 2,500 passengers. The vessel will reach a speed of 25 knots driven by 40 MW engines.
