Vulcan Christens New M/V H.A. Sklenar

Vulcan Materials Company christened the M/V H.A. Sklenar at the company’s Blakely Island sales yard at the Port of Mobile recently. The vessel brings Vulcan’s fleet of Panamax-Class self-unloading vessels to three. The Sklenar and its sister vessels W.H. Blount and Bernardo Quintana, transport high quality limestone aggregates from Vulcan’s Sac Tun quarry on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to markets along the U.S Gulf Coast, the east coast of Florida and the Caribbean. “We are pleased to honor our former chairman and CEO, Herb Sklenar, by naming our third vessel after him,” said Don James, Vulcan’s chairman and chief executive. James said long-term population growth and market demand in the region are expected to continue to increase at levels above the national average…

Tugboat Named For Long-serving Vulcan Employee

US company Vulcan Materials christens new tugboat 'Hazel Demery' in honor of nurse with 58 years of company service. The new tugboat for the company's Grand Rivers facility is named for Hazel Demery, a prominent figure in the Grand Rivers community. Mrs. Demery was guest of honor at the christening ceremony held at Vulcan's harbor, which is adjacent to the Kentucky Dam & Locks. Beginning in 1951, Mrs. Demery worked as a nurse for Reed Crushed Stone, which was acquired by Vulcan in 1990. Mrs. Demery continued working for Vulcan until she retired in 2009 with 58 years of service. Darren Hicks, Vulcan's director of human resources – Southern and Gulf Coast Area said, "Hazel's exemplary life has focused on service to our Company, her community, her family and her church.

Court: Gov’t Immune from Contribution in Collision

The US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled that the federal government is immune from a claim of contribution from a vessel owner that alleged negligence on the part of the U.S. Navy in conducting a nighttime training exercise in which a Navy member was killed in a collision with claimant's vessel. The estate of the deceased Navy member filed a wrongful death action against the tug owner. The tug owner sought contribution from the federal government, alleging that the collision between its tug and the rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) of which the deceased was a crewmember was caused in part by the negligence of the Navy personnel who organized and conducted the training exercise.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Tug Operator, Navy

After a four-day trial, a federal judge ruled on Dec. 18 in favor of the family of Freddie Porter, Jr., a 19-year-old U.S. Navy enlisted seaman from New Jersey who in 2007 was killed when the small craft carrying him was overrun by a tugboat pushing a large flotilla on Virginia's James River. The tug, owned and operated by Vulcan Materials Company, collided with the Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) carrying Porter as he engaged in nighttime military training exercises. The court found the United States Navy 80 percent responsible for Porter's death and Vulcan 20 percent responsible, awarding Porter's family $1,250,000. Attorneys for the victim's family believe the judge's ruling against Vulcan and the Navy will have widespread implications for the nation's tugboat operations in U.S.

Obituary: Joseph E. LeBlanc Jr.

Joseph E. LeBlanc Jr. passed away on June 27, 2014. He was 87 years old. Joe was president of Three Rivers Rock Quarry in Smithland, Ky. (a division of Harbert Construction), Three Rivers Towing, Harcon Barge Lines and Louisiana Limestone during the late 60s and 70s. He also worked later for Luhr Brothers at their St. Genevieve, Mo. Facility and was General Manager for Boyce Machinery in Morgan City, La. for a few years and also worked as a consultant and for NREC in Houma after he retired. Prior to working for Harbert, LeBlanc was employed by Thomson Tractor in Birmingham, Ala.

DuPont Scrubber Systems Ordered for Bulker Newbuilds

Jiangsu Hantong Shipyard Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. has awarded a contract to DuPont Sustainable Solutions for the supply of its DuPont Marine Scrubber systems for two new-build, self-unloading bulk carriers. The scrubber systems were developed by Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), a DuPont subsidiary. Vulica Shipping Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S.-based Vulcan Materials, owns the carriers, which will operate throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Each ship will feature one multi-inlet scrubber…

Another Scrubber Retrofit for Vulica Shipping

DuPont awarded third marine scrubber order by Vulica Shipping Co. Ltd. Vulica Shipping Co. Ltd. has selected DuPont Clean Technologies for the supply of a hybrid single-stream scrubber designed by DuPont subsidiary Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO) to be retrofitted to MV H.A. Sklenar, a self-unloading bulk carrier that operates along the Gulf of Mexico. The vessel is owned by Vulica Shipping Company Ltd., a subsidiary of Vulcan Materials. “We designed the exhaust gas scrubber tower and scrubber system so Vulica could efficiently treat the exhaust gas produced by the main diesel engine on MV H.A. Sklenar,” Garrett Billemeyer, Technology Development manager explained.

Vulcan Repowers Vessel, Reports $225,000 Annual Savings

Vulcan Materials recently repowered 66’ Capt. Ted with a Mitsubishi engine, leading them to reported annual savings of $225,000. At Vulcan, choosing a repower engine for any tug in their fleet is a matter management takes quite seriously. For their recently repowered 66’ Capt. Ted, exhaustive research undertaken by Larry Gravely, Operations Manager, and Lin Dixon, Marine Maintenance Supervisor, paid off big time. The cost-effective and reliable operation of these vessels is the responsibility of Gravely and Dixon.

54th Ship to Depart James River Reserve Fleet

The Vulcan is scheduled to be towed from the James River Reserve Fleet on Tuesday, December 19th. It will be the 54th ship to leave the James River site for recycling since January 1, 2001. The Vulcan, a former Navy repair ship built in 1941, which will leave the James River site to be dismantled at Bay Bridge Enterprises, LLC, of Chesapeake, Va., under the terms of a contract worth $494,000. The Vulcan has a small niche in Naval history. Until 1978, the only Navy ships to carry women on duty were hospital ships. That year, the Vulcan became the first non-hospital Navy ship to carry women on active duty. The Vulcan is expected to pass under the James River Bridge approximately two hours after the departure.

Bay Bridge Enterprises Gets Latest Ghost Fleet Contract

MarAd will pay Bay Bridge Enterprises $494,000 to remove the Vulcan and tow it to its Chesapeake salvage yard on the Elizabeth River within 45 days. The Vulcan is a former Navy repair ship built in 1941. The Vulcan will be recycled for steel. The company will also remove and dispose of waste fuels and other potential pollutants on the ship. Bay Bridge Enterprises has gotten several contracts to scrap Ghost Fleet ships from the Maritime Administration.

Rolls-Royce Wins Submarine Support Contract

Rolls-Royce won a second service contract from the Ministry of Defense to ensure the safety and power performance of Royal Navy nuclear submarines, in a deal worth more than $500 million. Under this contract, the company will continue to operate and maintain the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment site at Dounreay, Scotland, on behalf of the Ministry of Defense, to service and support Royal Navy programs over the next 13 years. This facility tests the operation and performance of the nuclear power plants used to support the UK submarine flotilla. On November 14, Rolls-Royce announced it had won a contract to provide a total powerplant support package, worth about $150 million over the next three years.

Harris Joins Port of Tacoma

Paulette Harris recently joined the Port of Tacoma Finance Department as Senior Accountant. Before joining the Port, Harris was Senior Accountant for Vulcan Inc. (Seattle), responsible for financial statements and supervised the company’s annual budget and forecast process for operating expenditures. Previously, she was a Staff Accountant for Frank Russell Co. (Tacoma), where she managed monthly shareholder reporting for Frank Russell Investment Company. She also supported financial operations and administration for Frank Russell Trust Company funds.

From the Navy News Service 1942 - Patrol Wing (VP) 82 aircraft sinks German submarine, U-656. It is the Navy's first submarine kill of World War II. 1954 - The first of six detonations takes place during Operation Castle nuclear test. 1980 - USS Vulcan (AR 5) completes first six-month deployment with women as part of its crew.

Korea's STX Offshore Wins Patrol Ship Order

STX Offshore wins US$ 132-million order for 3 patrol ships for the Korea Coast Guard. Under the deal with the Korea Coast Guard (KCG), STX Offshore will deliver the vessels by the end of 2015, the company told Korea Times.

 The vessels, equipped with a Vulcan cannon, can cruise at an average speed of 30 knots. STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co., the nation's fourth-largest shipbuilder, also delivered similar patrol ships to the KCG in 2010 and 2011.

Tech File: Bulk Barge Cargo Transfer Systems Solution

Pontchartrain Materials Company finds innovative solution for barge unloading applications. Located in New Orleans, La., Pontchartrain Materials Corporation, LLC provides aggregates to general contractors as well as asphalt and ready-mix companies. In addition to their chief product, limestone, the family-owned company sells recycled concrete and recycled asphalt. Pontchartrain sources the material from quarries in northern states, transferring it down the Mississippi River by barge to one of three company aggregate yards or directly to customers in the New Orleans and surrounding area.

Five More to Leave MarAd Reserve Fleet

Five ships moored in Virginia, California, and Texas will be headed to recycling yards under contracts announced today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. Two of the ships are from the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in Benicia, Calif.; two are from the Beaumont Reserve Fleet in Texas; and one is from the James River Reserve Fleet in Newport News, Va. Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton siad that plans worked out with Congress called for the removal of at least 13 ships from the fleet sites in 2006, and that the agency has almost doubled that number, removing 25. Blount Barker Delivers South Ferry Vessel

The 101-ft. double-ended ferryboat, Sunrise, was delivered to South Ferry, Shelter Island, Long Island on July 30th. The vessel began servicing the half-mile crossing of partially protected inland waters between Shelter Island and the South Fork of Long Island on Friday, August 2nd. The 101’ x 39’ x 10’-5” ferryboat designed by Dejong & Lebet, Inc. was built to USCG Sub Chapter “T” Rules and Regulations for 150 passengers. The vessel is a traditional car ferry with one open auto deck and enclosed aluminum side cabin with pilothouse. The Sunrise can carry a maximum of 50 cars or 4 semi-tractor trailers with a maximum load of 240,000 pounds.

Emilsen Fisk Buys a Workboat from Tuco Marine

Danish shipbuilder Tuco Marine rounded out 2017 with the sale of another ProZero boat for the Norwegian fish farming sector. Emilsen Fisk in Rørvik has ordered a ProZero boat tailored to breeders' specific requirements. The 11-meter ProZero workboat, purchased through Tuco subsidiary ProZero Norge AS, will be used for passenger transport at the Emilsen Fisk AS breeding plant off Rørvik. Tuco noted that the vessel’s deep-V bottom secures a comfortable ride and exceptional seakeeping capabilities – all-important qualities if the crew is to arrive rested and ready at the facility.

BP Deepwater Horizon Costs Balloon to $65 Billion

BP said on Tuesday it would take a new charge over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill after again raising estimates for outstanding claims, lifting total costs to around $65 billion. The post-tax, non-operating $1.7-billion charge BP will take in its fourth quarter results came after claims resolved in recent months were about seven times higher than anticipated, the London-based company said. The claims were part of the Court Supervised Settlement Program that was set up in the wake of the disaster and included nearly 400,000 cases, BP said.

Microsoft Mogul's Yacht Destroys Coral Reefs

The anchor chain of 303-foot mega-yacht, the Tatoosh, belonging to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has been blamed for destroying a large area of protected coral reef in the Cayman Islands. It destroyed almost 14,000 square foot, or about 80 per cent,  of reef in a protected area in the West Bay area of the Cayman Islands, according to the islands' Department of Environment (DoE). Obituary: Arthur Everett Lyman, USMMA Alum

LEOMINSTER, MA -- Arthur Everett Lyman reportedly passed away on Sunday, Feb. 3rd, at Life Care Center in Leominster, MA. Arthur was born in Vulcan, Alberta on Feb. 27th, 1921. He is survived by, his sisters Mary E. Kent of Kent, WA and Laura M. Engbrecht of Seatac, WA, his sons Arthur E. Lyman, Jr. and Catherine Butera of Dobbs Ferry, NY, and Peter S. Lyman and Carole Carnovale of Mendon, MA, his grandson William Pica of Dobbs Ferry, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lyman graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) in 1943. During WWII he served as an engineer on numerous merchant ships that provided supplies to both the European and Pacific theatres.
