The Navigation Safety Advisory Council (NAVSAC) will meet June 6-8 in Portland, Maine. NAVSAC advises the Coast Guard on the prevention of
vessel collisions, allisions, and groundings, as well as issues related to the Inland and International Rules of the Road, navigation regulations and equipment, routing measures,
marine information, diving safety, and aids to navigation systems. The agenda includes several issues of interest to AWO members:
Barge and towing industry input on NAVSAC's recommendations on barge lighting
Acceleration of Automatic Identification System (AIS) implementation;
Maritime security update and member information exchange;
Status report on ballast water
issues;
Update on the Marine Transportation System (MTS)
initiative; and
Overview/update on navigation technology.
NAVSAC will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7, and from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 8. All
meetings are open to the public and
will be held at the Eastland Park
Hotel, located at 157 High Street, in
Portland. The meetings may close
early if all business is finished.
