Bremen-based STN Atlas Elektronik has been awarded a contract worth $2.5 million by the Norwegian National Coastal Administration for design and installation of new VTS facilities at Kvitsoy in the south west coastal region of the country. The facilities, which will be used to monitor and control shipping traffic in and around the Stavanager area, are to be commissioned at the end of next year.

Comprised of remotely equipped Atlas X-band radar sites at Duehammar, Hemnes, Røvær, Våganeset and Vigdel, (a sixth radar will be installed at Kvitsøy) the facilities will also house two supplementary VHF communication sites at Bookn and Prestasen, as well as a CCTV site at Norheim; they will be connected to the center by a data network for automatic relay of radar video, track, voice and CCTV information.

The VTS center itself will be equipped with a series of Atlas 9750 multi-media, dual-display operator workstations and associated processing equipment supported by secondary display terminals for database information as well as remote VHF and CCTV control. They collectively will provide continuous graphic presentations of all traffic situations, including overlays of radar images on electronic charts; additional functions include synchronized logging, recording and replay radar and voice communication.
