Global leaders in the oil and gas industry will descend on the U.K. for an annual technical day organized by Reservoir Group member company Kirk Petrophysics.

Experts from across the field will lead the discussions at the event, which is being held at the firm’s newly expanded Core Center in Guildford next month. Specialists from leading international firms including Schlumberger, Dhahran Carbonate Research Center, SGS and Empirica will be among those attending the event.

The technical day on May 30 will provide insight into the latest techniques being used in the coring industry.

The program will include two core workshops – the first focusing on Nexen’s Buzzard field and being led by Mike Ashton from reservoir geoscience consultants Badley Ashton & Associates. The second will discuss the pre-salt Gamba Sandstone, offshore Gabon and West Africa, and it will be presented by John Price of Harvest Natural Resources and Andy Lever from RPS Energy.

Jean-Valery Garcia, managing director of Kirk Petrophysics, said, “The success of any formation evaluation program depends on good coring practice. Logs alone cannot characterize a reservoir without a sound knowledge of the rock. The core provides the only physical measurement of reservoir characteristics, which is fundamental to achieving production targets.

“The year on year success of this event demonstrates the benefits that sharing best practice and knowledge can have on the future of the oil and gas industry and it is vital that operators and service companies continue to meet and share their expertise in this way.”

The agenda extends to presentation of Corpro’s QuickCapture coring tool, a showcase of MSI’s gas detector devices, and access to Nexen Petroleum and Harvest Natural’s Core. Delegates will also have the opportunity to take a tour of Kirk Petrophysics’ Core Center facilities, which include an on-site laboratory providing analytical services that range from core processing and core analysis to petrology and thin sections
