Long Beach Harbor Patrol Rescues Sea Lion

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

March 28, 2016

Recently, Harbor Patrol Officer Benjamin Martin, with help from Long Beach Animal Control, rescued a baby sea lion near a railroad track in the Port. No one knows how the sea lion got there, but he may have wanted a place to play, nap or snack.

Obviously, railroad tracks are not a good place for an animal. Thankfully, Officer Martin skillfully worked with Animal Control to rescue the little lost pup before he could get hurt. In the process, two trains had to be briefly delayed, but Port operations were not significantly impacted.

After the sea lion was safely rescued, he was taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, where he was given a health checkup and food. His health is currently being monitored.

“It is my job to make sure those who work or pass through our Port are safe, but also to look out for all the animals that call this harbor their home, too,” Officer Martin said. “I needed to make sure this little guy was brought to a safe place, so I had Animal Control help me out and take him to a shelter.”
