1942-The Coast Guard-manned weather ship USS Muskeget disappeared without a trace while on weather patrol in the North Atlantic.  Her entire crew of 9 officers and 111 enlisted men were lost.  It was learned after the war that she had been torpedoed and sunk with all hands by the U-755.

1943-The invasion of Salerno, Italy began on this date in 1943.  Coast Guard units, including LCI(L) Flotilla 4 (a landing craft force manned and commanded entirely by the Coast Guard) participated.
