Globalization of shipping will be the theme of the 11th annual Hellenic-American and Norwegian-American annual conference. Entitled “Shipping without Borders: Has National Identity Become Irrelevant?”, the conference will be held on Thursday, February 10th at the New York Helmsley Hotel starting at 0815 with conference registration..

The conference will explore developments and shifts in the international maritime community, and how they relate to doing business in America. Comparative Greek and Norwegian perspectives on identity, as well as innovative and technological advances will be presented. Wilhelm Wilhelmsen, chairman of the Norwegian shipping company of that name will deliver the luncheon keynote address on the globalization of the shipping industry.

Richard duMoulin, a partner of Intrepid Shipping LLC and co-chairman of the conference, stated: “I think it is impressive that two great shipping communities are collaborating to present a conference with such high-quality speakers and attracting such a great turnout of top industry executives. This will be an active conference, with a lot of dialog amongst the participants.”

Speakers for the conference include Morten Arntzen of Overseas Shipholding Group, C. Sean Day of Teekay, Peter C. Georgiopoulos of General Maritime, Colin Veitch of Norwegian Cruise Lines, Tor Svensen of Det Norske Veritas, Basil Mavroleon of CR Weber, Leif Hoegh of Leif Hoegh (UK), Robert Malone of BP Shipping, Glen Oxton of Healy & Baillie LLP, Marianne Lie of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, Nicholas Efthymiou of the Greek Shipowners’ Association, and Dean Taylor of Tidewater.

“Much work has gone into developing a program that reflects the important issues of our industry”, observed Derick Betts, Partner at Seward & Kissel LLP and conference co-chairman. “When you combine topical content with high-calibre participants, you have a recipe for a compelling and pivotal event.”
