Long Beach Cargo Continues to Climb
Cargo container traffic rose 7.3 percent in September at the Port of Long Beach compared to the same month last year, making for the Southern California seaport’s busiest September since 2007, the Port’s peak year. A total of 629,771 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) was moved through the Long Beach Harbor in September. Of those, 339,343 TEUs were imports, up 10.2 percent compared to September last year. Exports declined 12.1 percent to 118,412 TEUs.
WWII Wrecks Found off North Carolina
A team of researchers led by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries have discovered two significant vessels from World War II’s Battle of the Atlantic. The German U-boat 576 and the freighter Bluefields were found approximately 30 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Lost for more than 70 years, the discovery of the two vessels, in an area known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, is a rare window into a historic military battle and the underwater battlefield landscape of WWII.

Catamaran Passenger Ferries Delivered in Angola
Incat Crowther announced the delivery a pair of 30m catamaran passenger ferries, Macôco and Panguila, to Instituto Marítimo e Portuário de Angola. The vessels, built by Astilleros Armon in Spain, will be operated by subsidiary TMA Express. Macôco and Panguila are the first deliveries in an aggressive infrastructure-building project that also includes a pair of 36m ferries – also constructed by Astilleros Armon - to be delivered shortly.
Renewable Energy: Schottel Tidal Turbines Ready For Use
In the last months Schottel successfully tested its hydrokinetic turbines in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland. The full-scale tests included 260 operating hours under realistic conditions. The result: One turbine with a rotor diameter of four meters generates 50 kW per second at a rated water velocity of 2.75 meters per second. 10 hours of operation provide enough electricity to supply an average household for a month.
New Intermodal Rail Service from PortMiami
Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) and PortMiami, through a strategic alliance, are offering the Sunshine Gateway service, which includes on-dock intermodal rail capabilities. This seamless ship to rail transfer allows the port to handle additional volumes and ensures that shipments move more quickly and efficiently with the potential to reach 70 percent of the United States population in four days or less.

Good News from China on GDP, Industrial Production
The economic news from China this morning were somewhat comforting but highlights that the economy activity in the world’s largest economy is certainly slowing down, reports BIMCO. Behind the headline GDP, other economic indicators such as industrial production, electricity consumption, credit growth and real estate investments suggest that things are still settling down at a slower pace going forward, from what have seen in recent years.
