Expedition Support Vessel Contract for Kleven
The contract is for a high specification, 107-metre long Expedition Support Vessel, specially designed for long expeditions in rough waters. The new vessel will accommodate 60 people and is to be equipped with a helipad and helicopter hangar. It will be built at Kleven Verft in Ulsteinvik and is scheduled for delivery in December 2014. The vessel blends a robust, hard-working character with luxurious added extras, including a swimming pool and its own 21m tender boat on the bow.

POLB Cargo Volume Soars
Port of Long Beach (POLB) terminals saw a dramatic 37% increase in cargo in February 2013 compared to same month last year. The terminals moved 36.6 percent more containers compared to the same month one year ago ― including a nearly 46 percent surge in imports and a 17.2 percent jump in exports. February’s total was 530,967 TEUs (or twenty-foot equivalent container units). There were 279,144 TEUs of imports, the highest volume of import containers for a February since 2007.

Obituary: Michael Jean Markey
Michael Jean Markey died peacefully at Swedish Hospital on March 2, 2013. Mike was born in Seattle, Wash., in 1932. He graduated from West Seattle High School in June 1950, and he received a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Stanford University in June 1954. In 1958, Mike joined his father, William C. Markey, at the family firm, Markey Machinery Company, Inc. in Seattle. MMCo was founded in 1907 by Mike's grandfather, Charles H. Markey. Mike was with the company until his retirement in 1996.

Port of L.A. Container Volumes Increase 17% in February
The Port of Los Angeles has released its February 2013 cargo volumes. Overall volumes increased 16.99% compared to February 2012. The increase was due in part to a surge in imports prior to the closure of factories for the Chinese New Year. Imports jumped 25.23%, from 254,359 Twenty-Foot Equivalent (TEU) containers in February 2012 to 318,547 TEUs this February. Exports dropped 4.88%, from 164,725 TEUs in February 2012 to 156,690 TEUs in February 2013.

British Secretary of State for Defense, Philip Hammond, signaled a key moment in the creation of aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth during his visit to the assembly site, Babcock’s Rosyth Dockyard.
