New opportunities in the Barents Sea
Holdings in 11 new production licences have been awarded to Statoil in the 21st licensing round on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), which was announced by the government today, 15 April. The group received eight new operatorships, with four of these in the Barents Sea and four in the Norwegian Sea. “We are very pleased with the award of new acreage in the Barents and Norwegian Seas,” says Gro Gunleiksrud Haatvedt, senior vice president for exploration on the NCS.

Piracy in the Indian Ocean
Somali based pirates continue to cause serious challenges to merchant vessels transiting the Indian Ocean.At the time of writing, EU NAVFOR statistics indicate that there are 26 vessels and 582 crew held captive off the coast of Somalia (not taking into account an unknown number of smaller dhows and fishing vessels that have been seized). Moreover, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported that Somali pirates hijacked 49 vessels in 2010, an increase from 47 in 2009.
Stolt-Nielsen Limited Completes Open Market Partial Tender Offer
LONDON, April 12, 2011 - Stolt-Nielsen Limited (Oslo Børs: SNI) completed its previously announced open market partial tender offer ("Offer") for SNL common shares with a total maximum value of $47 million. SNL bought back 1,825,900 shares at a price of NOK 140 per share at a total cost of $46.8 million. SNL now holds 6,285,530 shares, or 9.80%, of its common shares. With the completion of the Offer the $50 million buy-back programme announced by SNL on November 19, 2010 is now accomplished.
EMAS to take delivery of FPSOs from Keppel Shipyard
EMAS Production is set to take delivery of one of Vietnam's largest Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels from Keppel Shipyard Limited (Keppel Shipyard), on behalf of owner PV Keez Pte. Ltd (PV Keez). To be managed and operated by EMAS Production, FPSO Lewek EMAS has been chartered by Premier Oil Vietnam Offshore B.V. for the development of the Chim Sáo field off southern Vietnam for six years, with a further option to extend the charter by another six years.
WSS Rolls Out Single Payment System
Ship operators and managers are benefitting from the administrative efficiency of a single payment system for port calls launched by Wilhelmsen Ships Service. A Float Account scheme operated by the company enables the ship operator to deposit a fixed amount with them to cover a month’s anticipated port calls. The sum is used to cover all the expenses of the operator’s vessels, wherever they call in the world.
Trelleborg’s Acquisition of Business In offshore Oil and Gas
Trelleborg’s acquisition of a business in the offshore oil and gas industry in Brazil from a subsidiary of Veyance Technologies has been finalized. The business focuses on specially designed oil hoses for surface and deep-sea applications for the strongly growing offshore oil and gas extraction industry in Brazil. The operation will be integrated into Trelleborg Engineered Systems business area. A press release on the agreement regarding the acquisition was published on March 14, 2011.
Cruise Ship Fuji Maru Assists in Iwate Prefecture
TOKYO — Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President: Koichi Muto) today reports that its ocean cruise ship Fuji Maru has provided free day-use services such as meals, baths, and rest for victims of the Tohoku–Pacific Ocean Earthquake at ports in Iwate Prefecture. About 1,000 people in Ofunato and Rikuzen-takata cities took advantage of the service at Ofunato port on April 11 and 12, and about 300 people at Kamaishi port on April 13.
Bollinger Receives Safety Award from SCA
Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. was awarded the 2010 Award for Excellence in Safety by the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA). The award was presented during the association’s April 5, 2011 general membership meeting held in Washington, D.C. The Award for Excellence in Safety is given to member companies who have an end-of-year Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) that is below the average SCA rate.
Bollinger Appoints Bowen to Head Patrol Boat Program
Bollinger Shipyards appointed Charles "Skip" Bowen as Program Manager for the FRC “Sentinel” Class Patrol Boat building program at Bollinger’s Lockport facility. Bowen joins Bollinger following a 32 year career with the United States Coast Guard, culminating with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, from 2006 to 2010. As the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, Skip served as a senior advisor to the Commandant of the Coast Guard.
