Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), a designer of membrane containment systems for the maritime transportation and storage of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), announced the order of nine Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs) which will be built by the Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
Six new ships will be owned jointly by TEEKAY & CLNG and the three others will be owned jointly by MOL & CSLNG.
These large vessels are expected to be delivered between 2017 and 2019. They will be built with the NO 96 membrane technology, with more than 20 years of successful experience at sea, which is well suited for these ice-breaking LNGCs and allows for an optimized daily boil-off rate of cargo LNG.
These nine Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers follow one identical Sovcomflot order of an LNGC, dated March 2014, also being built with NO 96 Technology.
According to GTT, these are the world’s first icebreaking LNGCs ever ordered. They will create the link between the liquefaction production plant at Yamal, located in the North West part of Russia, and numerous customers in North East Asia, travelling via the Arctic Ocean.
Commenting on this latest order, Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT declared, “We are very proud of having succeeded in convincing the various partners in this project that the GTT technology is perfectly adapted to this type of difficult environment.”
GTT has not identified any technical or political elements that could affect these orders.
