DSC and its customer, the Port of New Orleans, were recently recognized in the 2011 Hot-Dip Galvanizing Excellence Awards for use of galvanized steel throughout the dredge design.

The Dredge Edward S. “Ned” Reed was awarded in the water and marine category of the annual competition, representing the finest achievements in the use of hot-dip galvanizing. For each award, all parties involved in the project are recognized winners, as the nature of galvanizing is collaborative, and the final project reflects the work of many.

This project was the first time DSC collaborated with their now exclusive galvanizer, AZZ Galvanizing Services – Hobson. DSC and AZZ work together frequently as galvanized steel has become a new standard for the dredge manufacturer. “We chose to use hot-dip galvanizing as a way to protect the dredge’s handrails, stairs, walkways, and platforms. Galvanizing has become a popular solution in dredge manufacturing because of its durability. Most other coatings cannot withstand the corrosive environments in which the dredge will spend its life, making galvanizing a cost-effective solution for us and our customers,” states John Lightsey, DSC’s Director of Technological Sales/Support.

As America’s largest galvanizer, AZZ Galvanizing Services applies molten zinc to metal components, providing decades of corrosion protection to steel products. For more information about hot-dip galvanizing, please visit: www.azz.com/azzags.htm
