CAE Gains Approval for BRM and ERM Training

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

February 13, 2015

The Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet)  granted approval to the CAE Oslo training center to conduct Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and Engine Resource Management (ERM) training.

The training courses are designed to address human behaviour and attitudes which can lead to human error on the bridge as well as in control and engine rooms.

This approval allows CAE to train engineers and deck officers separately or on a combined course (vessel team). The approval meets the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) requirements according to section A, tables A-II/1, A-II/2, A-III/1, A-III/2 for Leadership and Management training at both the operational and management levels.

CAE’s Maritime Human Element learning programs have evolved considerably since the development of the original BRM course in the early 1990s by SAS Flight Academy, which is now part of CAE. In addition to the Norwegian Maritime Authority approval, CAE was the first organization in the world to achieve Det Norske Veritas (DNV) accreditation against the mandatory STCW Leadership and Management requirements at both the operational and management levels.

CAE was also the first to achieve UK Maritime Coastguard Agency, Human Element Leadership and Management (HELM) approval at the management level.

The Maritime Crew Resource Management comprehensive suite of learning programmes are designed to bring an attitude change to safety through the development of much higher standards of leadership and communication amongst the vessel team. To support onboard implementation and effectiveness, training support courses are available for superintendent and senior officers tasked with the role of monitoring and developing an operator's competence and implementation of MCRM / BRM / ERM elements within their organization. Other support courses include training for shore staff which provides a practical insight into key aspects of MCRM training and the methods applied onboard ship.

Training can be delivered by the MCRM team at the customer’s location or  at any CAE’s training centers around the world.  MCRM instructors have experience in shipping and have been selected and trained through CAE’s in-house instructor qualification programme that is also available to licencee companies.
