According to reports, the Port Authority plans a vote to approve $5m to repair the dock and hull of the Intrepid.
The agency's chairman has championed spending that improves the region's transportation and port facilities, as well as security initiatives.
Despite recent steps by the agency to increase its openness, the Port Authority's spokesman, yesterday declined to discuss the rationale for the expenditure.
Last week, the Intrepid was pulled from its longtime berth at Pier 86 on Manhattan's west side and moved to Bayonne for repairs.
The ship is expected to undergo a $60m rehabilitation, funded primarily by federal, New York state and New York City money, before returning to the also-refurbished Pier 86 by the end of next year. Private donations also are being sought.
