Online Training Available

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

January 4, 2005

Maritime Training Institute announces Online learning programs for the busy marine professional. Online offers immediacy in that the courses are available for student participation every time a students logs on. It also offers convenience and flexibility that allows students to study wherever and whenever regardless of location, with access to the internet the only requirement. Online learning also offers better interactive capabilities including ‘tutorials', and 'student chat rooms' that have the potential to enhance the learning experience through online discussions and student networks. MTI has chosen an Asynchronous format to allow busy employees more freedom. Synchronous learning means logging on to live interactive sessions through video, phone, chat rooms, video conferencing. Asynchronous learning involves students pacing their learning and communicating through email without using these live tools. A common question is how can classroom assessment techniques be implemented for distance students, especially students communicating asynchronously? Reading and listening to lectures are quintessential passive activities, albeit very efficient mass-production methods. High-quality asynchronous learning environments require the learner to participate in both the passive lecture learning methods, and also in task-based problem-solving. In the asynchronous environment. The focus shifts from direct interaction with the instructor to direct interaction with the information. This requires organizing information in an interactive, rather than linear manner.

Online Learning Environments are becoming common and significant numbers of institutions of higher learning are choosing this option for continuing education. The rapid growth of the Internet and the needs of a mobile society have made OLEs very attractive options to those seeking education (STCW, Pollution and security issues and many other commercial applications).

Maritime Training Institute announces the first in a series of classes for the maritime worker. Online Security Training Awareness class is now available via the internet. This 8-hour program is for both shore personnel, and crews for complaisance with both ISPS / MTSA on-going training requirements. The course allows students to sign on anywhere in the world and complete the course, after demonstrating an understanding of the basic precepts of maritime security, a certificate will be awarded. The program is not designed to provide SSO/PFSO or CSO requirements; rather it will serve to maintain currency in accordance with flag state requirements.
