Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT), the $175 million terminal redevelopment project in Port Newark, N.J. has officially opened its gates for business. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, PNCT was christened by the U.K.’s HRH Prince Andrew to be the most advanced, international, multi-user container facility on the east coast. The joint venture company of P&O Nedlloyd and P&O Ports, Port Newark container Terminal signed a 30-year lease with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2000 to operate a 176-acre container terminal in Port Newark. For the past three years PNCT has been a working container terminal as two phases of the redevelopment process were in progress. The finalization of PNCT’s redevelopment project is scheduled for completion by June 2033, which includes strengthening and deepening berths to accommodate super post-panamax vessels, deployment of state-of-the-art cranes and straddle carriers, and the installation of advanced terminal management systems.
