Dog Adrift on Tanker Eludes Capture

Forgea, a 2-year-old female dog adrift on the Insiko 1907 since April 2, has eluded her rescuers, according to the Hawaiian Human Society. Sailors from two long line fishing vessels were unable Monday to catch a dog stranded on a crippled refueling tanker. The Hawaiian Humane Society has spent $50,000 to rescue the animal. Hawaiian Humane Society President Pamela Burns said, “As you might imagine, Forgea is exceedingly fearful and attempts to rescue her have scared her even more. She has so far eluded her rescuers. She has access to hidden areas on the 256-ft.-long vessel which she knows well. We are not in a rush to remove her since she has plenty of food and water and feels comfortable on the Insiko. We are in constant contact with the fishing fleets in the area and will continue our rescue efforts.” The problem, apart from the fact that the dog has been left alone on the ship for nearly three weeks when a problem forced the crew to abandon ship, is the fact that the dog is accustomed to receiving its commands in Mandarin Chinese.
