For Institute of Marine Engineers of India having achieved standardisation and maintainenace of quality processes simultaneously not just at their Head Office but also their eight branches and Five Chapters, spread all over the country is unique in India, as it is run by a group of honorary volunteers who have dedicated themselves for the cause of their industry.

Being an achievement worth celebrating, members of the Institute gathered on Saturday 22nd August 2015, at IME (I) House, Nerul, for the presentation ceremony of the ISO 9001:2008 Certificate. The Chief Guest for the evening was Deepak Shetty, Director General Shipping, and the Guests of Honour, Arun Kumar Gupta, CMD SCI and Shashi Nath Mishra – Head, IRQS.

After successfully completing the Pre-Implementation Trainings, Internal Audits and 1st Stage Audits, the ISO 9001:2008 Certification Audits were carried out successfully by IRQS from 8th to 10th June 2015 in all the various Branches and Chapters of the IME (I) across India.  On completion of these audits, the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) became ISO compliant and thus the celebrations, albeit delayed.

Extremely modestly, Y Nath Head of the Sub Committee which had been formed to try achieve this accreditation, shared the credit with the HO team of V.K. Jain (HGS), N. Mathur (Director Training and Management Representative) together with numerous AMR’s (Assistant Management Representatives) and other personnel across the Branches
and Chapters who toiled, quite often, late into the night, for the last one year to ensure the achievement of this ambitious objective.

The proceedings commenced with a Welcome Address by the HGS, V. K. Jain whose original idea and inputs over the past 6 months enabled the project to be turned into a reality. Rajeev Nayyer, Vice President of the Institute gave a cogent presentation on the achievements and growth of the Institute over the years, and the Way Ahead on various fronts.

President IME (I) CV Subba Rao lauded the tremendous effort put in by Team IME (I) in achieving ISO 9001:2008 certification. The Certificate was presented by Shashi Nath Mishra to the President IME (I). Keeping abreast of the trajectory of technological innovation today is not easy, but your Institute is doing just that.

Thereafter AK Gupta, CMD SCI, launched a Mobile App which would not only enhance communication between members, but also has inbuilt features such as sending Birthday greetings to Members, allowing direct communication (messaging, emails) between Members, allow the Head Office to issue notifications via mobiles, enable mobile users to access the MER on their mobiles etc. The number of functions would be increased continuously and made more user friendly.

The Chief Guest, Deepak Shetty, Director General Shipping & Ex-Officio Additional Secretary to the Govt. of India, who was visiting IMEI House for the first time, spoke most eloquently and earnestly. Not only did he appreciate the yeoman contribution of the Institute towards the growth of the Shipping Industry, but also outlined his vision of a united voice of the Indian Shipping Industry, which would then be heard, and heeded, by the powers-that-be.

Hari Taneja, Past President of the Institute, handed over a cheque of Rs. 2,00,000/- for the Benevolence Fund of the Institute. His magnanimous gesture was loudly applauded by all The function was followed by an elaborate dinner, befitting the occasion. It was with great reluctance that members started departing for home. It was as if they wanted to stay to on and continue the interesting interactions with Past Office Bearers and other Members who had come in from the other corners of the Country to celebrate this proud moment for the IMEI.
