Antwerp Port led Consortium Formed

 

The ports of Antwerp, Mannheim, Rotterdam, Strasbourg and Zwitserland signed a cooperation agreement for the introduction of LNG in the European inland shipping sector.

The cooperation includes studies, promotion, knowledge transfer, regulations and bunker infrastructure.The agreements are set up in the framework of the LNG Masterplan for Rhine-Main-Danube, a project in which all five ports are partners. The goal of the LNG Masterplan is to introduce LNG as a fuel for inland shipping along the Rhine-Main-Danube corridor.

Through its TEN-T programme, the European Union grants € 40 million subsidies for this project.

Environmental services to shipping industry in Port of Antwerp Port of Antwerp has a standing tradition of providing environmental services to the shipping industry. Recently, the waste reception facilities of Port of Antwerp were identified by EMSA as an example for European ports. The provision of on shore power supply and reduction on harbour dues for cleaner ships for both inland and seegoing vessels, add to the list of initiatives by Port of Antwerp.

Truck-to-ship bunkering of LNG has been possible in the port since 2012 and bunker procedures were published on March 9, 2014. To further support the development of LNG for the shipping industry, Port of Antwerp invests in an LNG bunker terminal for inland shipping, which is subsidized by the LNG Masterplan project.
