Cummins Power Fast Ferries for Hong Kong

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

March 4, 2002

Marinteknik Shipbuilders (S) Pte Ltd. established a construction yard in Singapore in 1984. The Yard has built over 30 vessels, with speeds ranging from 18 to 50 knots, for delivery to customers in England, Italy, Malaysia, Brunei, France, Hong Kong and China. It works in association with Marinteknik Design in Sweden which provides design services and undertakes research and development projects for shipbuilders worldwide. A current project is an order of four 36 118 ft. aluminum catamarans for the Sun Hung Kee Ma Wan Transport Company Ltd of Hong Kong. Each of the four twin hulled vessels will be powered by twin Cummins KTA50 M2 engines driving MJP Water Jets through ZF 4650 marine gears with ratio of 1.9412:1. Each 16-cylinder engine will generate 1800 HP at 1900 RPM in a heavy duty rating. This engine has enjoyed a wide ranging acceptance in high speed catamarans in North America and this is believed to be the first such application in East Asia. The boat, designed to operate in inshore Hong Kong waters will have a 27-knot operating speed. The vessels will each be capable of carrying 400 passengers with a crew of five. The KTA50 M2 engines will be delivered to the Singapore yard in March and April with all four ferries scheduled for delivery to the owners in July.
