PPG Delivers Pipe Coatings in South Africa
Coatings specialist says it draws on local production network and highly experienced team to deliver high specification products for local utility project.
PPG Protective and Marine Coatings announced completion of a major project for Africa Pipe Industries, supplying internal and external coatings on a 46km, 2.1m diameter pipeline installed for South African utility Rand Water.
PPG supplied SIGMALINE 523 as an internal lining and SIGMALINE 855 as an external coating on the pipe installed at Sasolburg in the Free State region. Together, the coatings deliver high performance protection of both surfaces against corrosion and contamination of the pipeline content.
The continued demand for resource infrastructure in South Africa has seen Africa Pipe Industries play a significant role in the roll-out of new bulk water services in South Africa as well as providing oil and gas piping. PPG has built up more than 60 years’ experience and continuous investment in Africa, demonstrating a long term commitment to customers across the continent.
Marius Rademeyer, Market Manager, PPG Protective & Marine Coatings, said: “This project required PPG to provide corrosion and bacterial protection to international standards and very specific customer demands. SIGMALINE products have short manufacturing cycles due to quick curing times and the key advantage of single coat application properties.”
For the pipeline’s external coating, SIGMALINE 855 offers excellent corrosion and water resistance and a superior aesthetic finish. The coating’s excellent abrasion and impact resistance protected against minor damage during handling, transporting and installation with UV protection whilst awaiting installation onsite.
Approved and certified for potable drinking water to the BS 6920 2 standard, SIGMALINE 523 was applied as the internal lining. Resistant against bacterial growth, fast-curing and able to be applied to rotating pipes, the coating offers easy application on field joints after installation welding.
PPG operates a network of offices, manufacturing and warehouse locations across Africa, enabling the company to service customer demands directly throughout the continent. Production sites are situated in strategic locations with the capacity to produce and deliver products on time to customers in Africa and the wider region.
Rademeyer added, “PPG’s renowned operational infrastructure and worldwide capability are key assets for customers in Africa that need a fully-resourced and dependable global partner. In growth sectors, such as utilities, onshore and offshore oil and gas industries, PPG offers the complete range of support functions, with experienced teams in commercial, logistics, customer and technical services to ensure all projects are managed with utmost efficiency.”
