New Ferry for Maine

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

January 14, 2000

Kvaerner Masa Marine (KMM) was selected by the Maine Department of Transportation to negotiate a contract for the design of a new passenger/car ferry. Chosen from among 21 North American design firms, KMM's plan is scheduled to begin in January, and be completed during the first half of the year 2000. The owner's requirements call for a relatively compact 150 ft. monohull, capable of carrying 250 passengers and about 20 cars, or two large trailer trucks and a reduced number of cars. Some of the challenges KMM will face include Maine's inclement weather, which can cause icing on car decks, large seas, numerous lobster traps that foul propellers and regularly reduced visibility in fog. Deckhands will often assist the captain in acting as lookouts or manning the radar while proceeding through fog. The wheelhouse design must accommodate these particular operating methods. The vessel is also designed to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities, and may incorporate a small elevator so that all passengers can access the upper passenger deck and experience Maine's scenery.
