Birkenhead based SeaKing Electrical has been appointed to a four-year framework agreement for Mersey Ferries.

The maritime firm, which has supported the ferry fleet for many years, has been formally accepted onto the marine engineering consultants framework for Mersey Ferries until 2019.

SeaKing Electrical managing director Dave Gillam said the business will offer a complete maintenance and support package for the entire fleet – including the Snowdrop, which was recently repainted in the dazzle design of British pop artist Sir Peter Blake.

“We have delivered work for the fleet over the years, however we still had to showcase the diversity of our skills and expertise throughout a highly-competitive tendering process in order to be successfully appointed onto the framework," he said.

“Our USP lies in the high quality, range and flexibility of our service, combined with the knowledge and experience of staff. These key selling points are the bedrock which has enabled us build a multimillion pound international brand with long-term retained clients. SeaKing’s investment in apprenticeship schemes further demonstrates our commitment to the region and strengthens our case when tendering for local work. We passionately believe in creating opportunities to upskill the local workforce and promote knowledge transfer.”

Gillam said the Birkenhead outfit - which employs around 125 engineers – has a track record delivering projects on vessels including ferries, superyachts, tug boats, tankers, military, dive-support and offshore. He said typical areas that need attention include thruster systems, radar and navigation, generator synchronising, distribution boards and steering gear feedback systems.

"We will be providing Mersey Ferries with the complete marine electrical engineering service. This involves high-skill design, manufacturing, installation and maintenance," he said.

“Our role frequently involves constructing, modifying and refurbishing marine electrical control equipment. We further offer fault finding and repair services. Key components we deal with include electric motors, electronic variable speed drives, generator switchgear and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers). All of our marine installations meet SOLAS requirements.”
